Robin

About the Name Robin

The name Robin (Rah-bin) means "Bright Fame".

It can be used as both masculine or feminine.

It is derived from the name Robert.

The name can be spelled many ways, Robin, Robyn, Robbin.

I was able to trace my ancestors back to my great, great, great grandmother on my Mom's side, and her name was Euphamia so I guess I was unintentionally named after her. Cool huh?

Not a Robin? You can find the meaning of your own name at Behind the Name

On Being Named Robin

I took a lot of flack for being named Robin while I was in grade school.

American Robin - Bird

The American Robin (Turdus migratorius) is a migratory songbird of the thrush family. The similarity between the orange-red coloring of its breast and that of the smaller and distantly related European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) led to its common name. It is widely distributed throughout North America, wintering south of Canada from Florida to central Mexico and along the Pacific Coast. It has seven subspecies, but only T. m. confinis in the southwest is particularly distinctive, with pale gray-brown underparts. It is the state bird of Connecticut, Michigan, and Wisconsin.[2]

The American Robin is active mostly during the day and assembles in large flocks at night. Its diet consists of invertebrates (such as beetle grubs and caterpillars), fruits and berries. It is one of the first bird species to lay eggs, beginning to breed shortly after returning to its summer range from its winter range. Its nest consists of long coarse grass, twigs, paper, and feathers, and is smeared with mud and often cushioned with grass or other soft materials. It is among the first birds to sing at dawn, and its song consists of several discrete units that are repeated.

The adult Robin is preyed upon by hawks, cats, and larger snakes, but when feeding in flocks it is able to be vigilant and watch other birds for reactions to predators. Brood parasitism by the Brown-headed Cowbird occurs, but is rare because the Robin usually rejects the cowbird eggs.

European Robin - Bird

The European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) or, in Anglophone Europe, simply Robin is a small insectivorous passerine bird that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family (Turdidae), but is now considered to belong to the Old World flycatchers (Muscicapidae). Around 12.5 - 14.0 centimetres (5.0 - 5.5 in) in length, the male and female are similar in colouration, with a orange breast and face lined with grey, brown upperparts and a whitish belly. It is found across Europe, east to Western Siberia and south to North Africa. it is sedentary in most of its range except the far north.

The term Robin is also applied to some unrelated birds in other countries that bear red breasts. These include the American Robin (Turdus migratorius), which is actually a thrush, and the Australian Red Robins of the genus Petroica, which are more closely related to crows.

Rockin' Robin Song Lyrics

Artist- Bobby Day

He rocks in the tree-top all a day long
Hoppin' and a-boppin' and a-singin' the song
All the little birds on J-Bird St.
Love to hear the robin goin' tweet tweet tweet
[Chorus]

Rockin' robin (tweet tweet tweet)
Rockin' robin (tweet tweet tweet)
Oh rockin' robin well you really gonna rock tonight

Every little swallow, every chickadee
Every little bird in the tall oak tree
The wise old owl, the big black crow
Flapping them wings sayin' go bird go
[Chorus]

A wordy little raven at the bird's first dance
Taught him how to do the bop and it was grand
He started goin' steady and bless my soul
He out popped the buzzard and the oriole

He rocks in the tree-top all a day long
Hoppin' and a-boppin' and a-singin' the song
All the little birds on J-Bird St.
Love to hear the robin goin' tweet tweet tweet
[Chorus]

You know, I always wondered why the Robin lays such beautifully blue eggs? It's rare for us to see Robins in our backyard here in Florida -- but usually the Mockingbird and Cardinals. Interesting lens!
