Acupuncture A Brief Overview Of The Least Understood Alternative Health Treatment

There are many types of homeopathic treatment, but none is more misunderstood and surrounded by myth than acupuncture. There are many myths which surround the practice that are kept alive by the those who have never had a treatment. The use of acupuncture actually goes back over two and a half centuries in China. Since migrating to the west, it has been gaining both attention and acceptance as an all natural alternative treatment for many ills.

One of the myths which deter a lot of people from even trying it is that acupuncture is extremely painful. In actuality, most patients relate they only feel a slight prick, which they describe as not being painful. The needles used in the practice are not designed like common hypodermic needles, so they do not give the same discomfort. Many patients report they do not even feel a lot of the needle insertions.

The goal of using acupuncture is to treat illnesses and relieve pain by causing the body to release endorphins and serotonin. Many illnesses have been reported to respond well to the treatments, which has caused more and more westerners to open their minds to this unusual treatment.

Everything from menstrual pains to injured limbs can be treated by an acupuncturist. Many sports injuries are being treated with this method, which include muscle injuries and nerve injuries. On the more everyday applications, it is used to relieve tooth pain, arthritis pain and even to speed healing after surgery.

Misconceptions surround the practice of acupuncture, such as the fear of disease transfer and the treatment has no track record for helping anyone. In actuality, each patient is given treatment with their own personal set of needles. The needles are not used to treat more than one person, so there is no risk of disease transfer. There have also been extensive studies which have shown acupuncture is responsible for helping the majority of patients who were treated after having a paralyzing stroke. This means that the practice does have a positive effect on the body.

The best way to know if acupuncture can help you is to ask your physician for a referral to an acupuncturist. You will be able to ask questions and get detailed answers to your questions from someone who performs the procedure every day. The amount of time it takes for you to receive noticeable benefits will be determinate on several factors, which your acupuncturist can go over with you in detail.

Acupuncture and Back Pain

Of all the pains reported, back pain seems to be the most prevalent. The reasons for the pain are many, but the one common thread among all the complaints is that they want the pain to stop. There are several treatments for back pain. Pain killers, surgery, and chiropractic care are the predominant three treatments. For those who wish to go natural, there is also acupuncture.

Acupuncture uses needles which are inserted into certain target areas of the body in an attempt to aid the body in healing itself. The practice has been used for centuries, and has been used to treat many illnesses. For those who suffer severe back pain, acupuncture may be an alternative treatment worth looking into.

Since the use of pain killers on an extended basis can lead to dependence, it is not advised that anyone choose this method as treatment for a chronic illness. Chiropractic care works for some people, but it does not work for everyone. No one wants to go through surgery. It carries risks of infection and is definitely painful. The general anesthesia is also a big risk for some.

The use of acupuncture does not have the side effects of any of these other treatments, and it is an all natural treatment. It is considered safe for use with any other treatments you may be using. As always, it is important to speak with your care provider before beginning any type of treatment, even those which are considered as all natural.
Since acupuncture is not considered a conventional medicine, it is not covered by insurance plans. It is therefore something you will have to pay for on your own. Luckily many acupuncturists will gladly discuss payment options if they believe the treatments will be ongoing.

When you go for your first appointment to the acupuncturist, you will be asked many questions, so they can best plan out treatments to suit your needs. During this first session, do not be put off by the questions. You will need to remember to ask them questions too. You should ask them about their proposed treatment plan, and don't forget to ask about qualifications before you begin treatment. Just as with any other treatments you may receive, you want to make sure the person treating you is well qualified.
