Hidden birds sing as cool and clear
As a bamboo forest.
Between swinging willows
Sun beams glimmer
Like golden threads.
Clouds return to this calm valley.
The winds carry the fragrance of almonds.
By sitting alone all day long

This is one of my favorite books on Zen. Charlotte Joko Beck was the founder and resident Zen teacher of the Zen Center of San Diego, and "Everyday Zen" is a collection of her talks. Joko speaks about Zen in an ordinary, conversational, down-to-earth way -- as opposed to the paradoxical, poetic, non-logical style often found in Zen -- and she explicitly relates Zen to everyday life. For Joko, Zen is about being OK with everything, an OK-ness that does not imply fatalism, passivity, or an absence of feelings. She says: "For something to be OK, it doesn't mean that I don't scream or cry or protest or hate it. . . .
What is the enlightened state? When there is no longer any separation between myself and the circumstances of my life, whatever they may be, that is it."

This is a wonderful collection of vegetarian recipes presented in an easy-to-follow format. I recently lived at Tassajara for several years, and spent much of that time on the kitchen crew. I am delighted that this new edition includes so many recipes that I forgot to copy down when I left!
Vegetarian cooking in this country has graduated its early dependency on dairy and carbo-laden meals to an incredible variety of healthy and satisfying dishes. Ed's new edition keeps the best of the original Tassajara recipes and adds some of the latest community favorites to the mix.
And the most important flavor of all, that of the Tassajara community, can still be savored in Ed's poems and anecdotes about Zen practice and daily living in the valley monastery which inspired this book and continues to inspire so many people today.
