Inspiring Quotes about Down Syndrome or Trisomy 21

As I began my journey down the path of raising a child with Down syndrome, I recall reading a poem that is still precious to me today. It is, "Welcome to Holland," by Emily Perl Kingsley. Because those words meant so much to me as a mom facing the unknown, I've started this webpage. It is a collection of quotes about Down syndrome. The quotes have been gathered from parents, professionals, family members, and anyone else whose life has been touched by a person with Down syndrome. I am hoping that in some way they can be of help to others in the future.

Chris Burke

"Having Down syndrome is like being born normal. I am just like you and you are just like me. We are all born in different ways, that is the way I can describe it. I have a normal life."

~ Chris Burke

"I hope to have as many friends as all the stars in the sky. I think that I am getting very close to my wish."

~ Annie Forts

Having a child with DS has changed my life...
my life is brighter
my life is more wonderful
my life is filled with love

"I am so lucky I get to do so many things. I just want you to know, even though I have Down syndrome, it is O.K."

~ Sarah Itoh

Down Syndrome Creed

Making the decision to have a child - it's momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking outside your body.

~ Elizabeth Stone

Sam's mannerisms of saying "Hi" to everyone, hugging often, smiling and laughing through even the worst of times, his purity and innocence and his lack of worry, anxiety, stress and doubt seem like something we should all strive for....We have so much to learn from these individuals if we allow ourselves to see.

~ Susan Mayer

The "R" Word - Think Before You Speak

The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) Position Statement on the "R" Word

IQ Bell Curve"NDSS strongly condemns the use of the word "retarded" in any derogatory or inappropriate context. People with disabilities, like all people, deserve to be treated as valued citizens and not referred to in a hurtful manner for any purpose. Using the 'R word' is hurtful and suggests that people with disabilities are not competent. Negative and inaccurate public perceptions are the greatest barriers the National Down Syndrome Society faces in achieving acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome and other cognitive disabilities." ~ The National Down Syndrome Society

Technically, 'mental retardation' is a category on an IQ bell curve. It is used to classify intellect. It should never be used to call people names, or in an otherwise derogatory manner.

"Thankfully, it did not take long for me to discover that my daughter was not what the word "retarded" means. My daughter was and is beautiful. She is not stupid, she is not ridiculous, and she is not inadequate. She has taught me more in her lifetime than I had learned in mine!"

~ Ellie Stumbo (Stumbo Family Blog)

"I can't change that I have Down syndrome, but one thing I would change is how people think of me. I'd tell them: Judge me as a whole person, not just the person you see. Treat me with respect, and accept me for who I am. Most important, just be my friend. After all, I would do the same for you."

~ "Know Me Before You Judge Me"

"I would not have her any other way. Because of her, I have basked in love, joy, kindness, gentleness, peace, and goodness. Nothing about my daughter is a mistake. God does not make mistakes. "

~ Ellen Armendariz Stumbo

I love this lens. In China children with down's are often called "International face" children. I found that a little puzzling, but it is also a nice idea, because international children have love and joy in common, even if they don't speak the same language. Thank you for this beautiful page. your quotes are perfect.

    Heaven's Very Special Child

A meeting was held quite far from Earth

It was time again for another birth.

Said the Angels to the Lord above --

"This special child will need much love.

"Her progress may be very slow

    "Accomplishment she may not show.

    "And she'll require extra care

"From the folks she meets down there.

"She may not run or laugh or play

"Her thoughts may seem quite far away

"So many times she will be labeled

    "'different,' 'helpless' and disabled.

"So, let's be careful where she's sent.

"We want her life to be content.

"Please, Lord, find the parents who

"Will do a special job for you.

"They will not realize right away

"The leading role they are asked to play.

"But with this child sent from above

"Comes stronger faith, and richer love.

"And soon they'll know the privilege given

"In caring for their gift from heaven.

"Their precious charge, so meek and mild

    "Is heaven's very special child."

If every individual were to be surveyed for
    all qualities required to live a life complete;
Everyone will be found deficient in one or
more of them; the ideal an impossible feat.
    To call someone retarded, it is blasphemy indeed;
By doing so, our own retarded-ness we concede.

Thank you for introducing us to Blake. My daughter Taylor is now 16 and a freshman in high school. She never ceases to surprise us. This year, after participating in a unified sports program, one of the girls invited her to try out for the cheer leading team. To our delight (and fear), she joined the team and does wonderfully. In one of the stunts, she is at the top of the pyramid!

A beautiful tribute and reminder about the essence of loving each individual for who he or she is. Every child is a gift... a miracle. I volunteered for several years in a residential home for Down Syndrome adults. It was a joy and a privilege to make so many deep friendships with these precious individuals. They taught me what was most important in life. I will always treasure those memories. Thank you for sharing Blake with us.

"Look at our society. We're hateful, we judge, we make others feel terrible about their own self image, and we create this idea of what's 'normal', so no one feels good enough. Now take a look at a child wi...th down syndrome. Alwaysο»Ώ smiling, laughing, and encouraging. It makes me wonder if, in actuality, they don't have one too many chromosomes...but if we're actually one short of a full set needed to be beautiful human beings ((Does anyone know who said this))

Hello all. I appreciate finding this link as I had been checking more for my continuous effort to be informed and educated by heart about down syndrome. I became and decided to be an advocate for the next years of my life when my baby tower was born and diagnosed with ds. I wholeheartedly accepted her with my wife but life wasn't long for her and enough for us to enjoy. She died five days after. Now that she is an angel, my heart flies with her and I did promise that she will always be in my life full of love. As my personal simple campaign I created a group in facebook with same purpose and advocacy for people and families with ds and who are ds themselves. I would like to solicit support for whoever to be with me in my link. Thank you so much for this link and opportunity for me to share.

    With respect!

Incredible lens. What a sweet way to keep others informed of the syndrome and the most loving people in the world. My cousin was DS and we are all better people having her in our lives 35 years. Blessings rolling your way.
