Gold bullion value is calculated by its mass and purity. You can generally buy gold bullion in 10 gram or 1 ounce bars any of which should be certified 99.9% gold content. This makes it very valuable and gold bullion is usually smelted into gold bars or gold coins which are both sold at premiums.

Appreciated in current times not only for its beauty and rarity, gold bullion is considered by many as the best form of currency. In fact, every currency gives its only value per unit mass of gold. For example, just as the US Dollar is lined up against the Euro, gold is bought and sold against the major world currencies. The great thing about gold is that it has consistently outperformed all three major world currencies.

During these difficult economic times, in the US, the government has increased the "certificate of deposit" guarantee from $100,000 to $250,000 over a two year period and most recently unlimited the guarantee until the end of the year. As an attempt to build investor morale these programs have had the exact opposite affect. The US Dollar is sinking and is only able to save face as the Euro is suffering at the same time. Smart investors have stopped fretting about their money in the bank by solidifying their wealth in gold.
