The Importance of Branding Your Online Shop

Whether your online business is small or large, branding is very important for giving your business a unique, cohesive and consistent image.

You should first of all have a name which reflects what you sell, is easy to spell and is memorable. You should also check that it is an available domain name, it translates well into other languages (if you are selling internationally especially), and that it's not taken by another company.

Your business should have a domain name for sure, and if you have other venues too such as Facebook, Twitter or a blog, you should make sure that all of the websites related to your business have a consistent name, style, logo and banner too, plus you should use the same colours throughout.
The colours you choose are important, as is the style of graphics, since they give the first impression for your business. For instance, if your business is eco-friendly, fresh greens are a good choice. You could have a minimalist style for modern products, or you could go for colourful, elegant, feminine etc. Pick a font to suit your chosen style too, plus appropriate images.

Branding cohesively throughout your websites, and sticking to the same 'look' builds up trust in your business and creates a unique and hopefully recognisable image.

The following tutorial shows you how to also brand the customer's payment page on Paypal, so they see your shop banner as they go through the checkout process, thus reinforcing your shop image once more. After the how-to, I have listed some useful links on creating your own banner for free.

I hope you find it useful!

Branding Basics

Step One

- Login to your PayPal account as normal so that you are on your account overview page.

- Click on 'Profile' on the bar at the top.

Step Two

- In the list titled 'Selling Preferences', find 'Custom Payment Pages' and click.

Step Three

- Click the 'Add' button below the 'Your Page Styles' section.

- The title should now read 'Edit Custom Page Style'. In the blank space next to 'Page Style Name', you just need to name your new page style so you can identify it later. I just put my business name here.

Step Four

- The other piece of information required on the page is the 'Header Image URL' which is the specific web address for your banner only.
If you already have uploaded your banner to a website elsewhere, simply go to that website, right-click on the banner and choose 'Properties'.
Next to 'Address (URL)' is the header text you need. Highlight it, right-click and choose 'Copy'.

Step Five

- Go back to the Paypal page you had up on the screen previously, right-click and paste the header URL into the appropriate space. If you would like to preview how the header will look on the checkout page, press preview and click 'Preview Classic Checkout' and/or 'Preview Enhanced Checkout'.
If you're happy with how it looks, press 'Save'.

Step Six

- To set the new header as the default page style for customer transactions, select the circular tick-box next to the newly made page style and press 'Make Primary'.

Step Seven

- This step is only for if you are not happy with the preview and want to use a smaller/larger banner, OR if the the banner you want to use is not already uploaded onto a website elsewhere.

In these cases, you can upload it onto a photo sharing website such as Photobucket.
Simply sign up/log in and upload your chosen banner to the site. Click the 'Share' link above your uploaded banner image. Click on the 'Get link code' tab. Highlight, right-click and copy the URL in the 'Direct link for layout pages' space.

- Now go back to Step Five of this tutorial.

Step Eight

- This is how my payment page looked in Classic View. It's now finished!
