Magnificent Memorable~Manatees
Manatees live primarily in Florida inhabiting the shallow, marshy coastal areas and rivers of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. They also thrive in other warm climates. The manatee is a large gray aquatic mammal with a body that tapers to a paddle shaped tail, and two flippers. With whiskers on their snout, and a wrinkled head and face, the animal truly does appear a bit homely. On average an adult manatee weighs between 800 and 1,200 pounds, and is 10-12 feet long. The slow moving and gentle manatee spends most of its time eating and resting.
Manatees are thought to see and hear quite well although they have small eyes and lack of outer ears. A manatee eats only plants. Its floppy lips grab the plants and tear them into bite size pieces.
Boat strikes; propellers and hulls inflict serious or mortal wounds, which is the leading cause of death. Many manatees have a pattern of scars on their backs or tails after surviving collisions with boats.
West Indian manatees in the United States are protected under federal law by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 which make it illegal to harass, hunt, capture, or kill any marine mammal. Help manatees and other wildlife by adopting an animal.
