Beginner's Embroidery Tutorial Roundup
Needlepoint and cross stitch are two different types of needlework, but they are actually quite similar in technique. Both embroidery types can be used to create beautiful wall art or can embellish pillows, clothes, bags, purses and other fabric products.
The first half of this page lists tutorials and projects for learning the art of needlepoint, and the second half of the page lists how-tos and projects for beginner's cross-stitch.
I hope this page inspires you to give these crafts a try :-)

Needlepoint Materials
Introduction to Cross Stitch & Needlepoint
Cross stitch and needlepoint are both types of embroidery which use very recognisable and specific stitches i.e. cross stitch consists mostly or completely of cross shaped stitches, and needlepoint consists of mainly tent stitches which give the look of a tapestry.
Needlepoint is where yarn is stitched onto canvas either in a freeform pattern, or the stitches follow a pattern which has been pre-painted or printed onto the canvas. Most needlepoint designs completely cover the canvas. Although needlepoint may be worked in a variety of stitches, many needlepoint designs use only a simple tent stitch which rely upon color changes to construct a pattern. For more information on needlepoint, click here and here.
Cross stitch consists mainly of simple crossed stitches which can cover all or only a small fraction of the fabric. The fabric used is usually evenweave cotton mesh fabric, which has evenly spaced holes in which to pass the needle through. 14 count fabric for instance has 14 holes per inch. This fabric can be stamped so that the design is already printed on it, or it can be plain and the technique of 'counted' cross stitch is used. Counted cross stitch is where you follow a separate paper chart to see where the stitches need to be placed.
Embroidery floss is most often used for the stitches, which is made up of separate threads. The chart will tell you how many threads to use.

Needlepoint Info & The Most Used Stitches
Needlepoint is where stitches are added to a cotton mesh canvas until it's completely covered. The mesh comes in different sizes, which are labelled like 10:1 (also called 10 count or #10), 14:1, or 18:1. 10:1 for instance means that there will be 10 stitches per inch of canvas, and this is the larger size so is therefore better for beginners to use.
The thickness of the yarn depends on what gauge the mesh of your canvas is. If you are using a smaller 18:1 mesh you might need to separate your yarn and use one strand at a time. If you are using a larger mesh ( 13:1 or 10:1) you might use 2 or 3 strands at a time.
Needlepoint traditionally uses wool. Appleton makes two types of wool yarn that would work well for needlepoint. The first is the Crewel Yarn which is the perfect weight for 18:1 mesh canvases. For 13:1 mesh canvases, look to Appleton Tapestry Yarn.
Handpainted canvases are all meticulously hand painted to make sure that the design is placed correctly on the grid of the mesh.
To start needlepoint you will need a needlepoint needle, small pointed scissors, yarn and canvas mesh. A lot of people also use a tapestry frame or stretcher bars to hold the canvas in place as they work, and you can also buy pre-printed canvas where the design is already worked out for you.
Finished needlepoint can be used like other fabric to make objects such as pillows, bags, purses and phone cases, or you could use it simply as wall art or use it to reupholster a chair etc.
Tent stitch refers to a family of needlepoint stitches worked diagonally over one intersection of canvas mesh. Tent stitch can be used to work the main design, or the background areas of the canvas.
Petit Point is a type of needlepoint where smaller, finer stitches are used. Petit Point is therefore often used to create mini furnishings for doll's houses.

- Wow... I used to do both of these crafts when I was first married... then child-raising, home-schooling, painting, desktop publishing, and sign language kind of filled up my time, and I forgot all about these. It's so good to see them again. I may get back to it. This kind of work gives me a great deal of satisfaction!
