Really Simple SEO

If you listen to most people in SEO forums you would get the impression that doing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on your website is an extremely complicated affair and not something that you can or should attempt on your own,

Nothing could be farther from the truth!

Most of what you need to worry about with SEO isn't very technical at all. And what;s more, the idea that if you do something wrong that Google will permanently blacklist your website is absurd...

The lions share of SEO activities are centered around getting more backlinks than your competition anchored with your keywords. And this isn't rocket science. Posting the backlinks themselves is usually more time consuming than it is difficult.

What's more, you can outsource the tasks a whole lot cheaper than you can hire a specialized SEO firm.

What you will find here though is a primer that will teach you how to get started doing simple tasks that can and will get your ranked on Google for even some very competitive keywords.

Let's start with an extremely simple outline of how to proceed...

Your SEO Process Outline

Pay Attention Closely To The Instructions Below

Let me tell you a secret...

It really is as simple as this:

1. Do your keyword research to determine what keywords you should be targeting.

2. Get some activity like comments to the pages you will be backlinking to. Ask people in chat rooms or your friends to do this if necessary as Google likes there to be a reason for the backlinks to be happening. It makes it all look that much more natural.

3. Post backlinks across the internet anchored with your keywords.

4. Ping your backlink URLs across multiple services to maximize the number of them being indexed by the search engines. Here is a free pinging tool that will let your do this automated: Mass Blog Pinger

5. Run the same URLs through an Index Checker to see which ones have yet to be indexed, and reping these,

6. Start over with your next batch of backlinks.

Step 1 - Do Your Keyword Research

Start Using Free Tools

There are no lack of expensive pieces of software and services to spend money on doing your keyword research!

And while I agree that it is a vital aspect of SEO work, I still recommend starting out using free tools for this.

What you are looking for are keywords and keyword phrases that have lower relative competition while still showing a good amount of search volume monthly.

Start with Google's External Keyword Tool for Adwords. Run a search using both your sites URL, and your most obvious keyword choice. In each case, click the column header for Global Search Volume to reorder from highest to lowest.

Look at the little bar graph for each keyword (or phrase) and find those near the top of the list with relatively lower competition. If you don't find enough likely candidates, you should probably go and do some work at Alexa.com.

First, Google your main keyword and run each of the top 5 returned in the SERPs through Alexa. Now, click on Search% and then on the right hand side click on "View Complete Search Analytics". You will be given a list of the top 30 or so keywords providing the site with traffic from the SERPs.

You should now have enough keywords to choose 4 keywords for your first backlink campaign.

Choose 4 keywords or phrases including your main keyword and move on to the next step.

Step 2 - Post Backlinks Across The Internet Anchored With Your Keywords or Phrases

<a href="http://YourURL.com">Your Keyword or Phrase</a>

The snippet of code in this module's subtitle is how you post a backlink using HTML code. On many forums, and some community sites, you will need to use BB Code, which will look like this most of the time:

[url=http://YourURL.com]Your Keyword or Phrase[/url]

Occasionally you will need to put the URL in quotation marks like in the HTML example, but not often. Try it when the code fails to render without it.

The thing to remember is that when a site doesn't render the HTML snippet into a live hyperlink, that Google reads the raw code as a backlink for you anyway. So if you aren't concerned with that sites readership, you are still good...

Below are the main ways that you can publish backlinks across the internet. If you find other ways, use them! This list is by no means exhaustive, but will give you plenty of places to start.
  • Article Marketing - This is one of the best methods for posting backlinks because you get double the benefit. You not only get the SEO juice from the backlinks in the Author's Resource Box, but you will get click thrus from those that read the articles.

    Tools:
    Content Crooner
    Article Writing Tool
    The Best Spinner
  • Web 2.0 Community Profile Backlinks - There are more of these sites each and every day. From MySpace to Facebook these types of sites allow you to create a profile and to include some of your own information, including backlinks. You usually do this in an "About You" section or in a field marked "Bio". In most cases you can use HTML code to do this. If the site strips out the code, you can always just leave the raw URL without the keyword anchor. Your site will still benefit, just not as much for the specific keyword.

Another site type that falls into this category are sites like Digg, the social news site. These sites run off of open source software called Pligg. These sites are heavily trafficed and Google loves them!

    Tools:
    Buy Profile Backlinks
    Pligg Site Autosubmitter
  • Forum Posting - When you set up a profile in a forum, you are allowed to build what is called a Signature File which will be visible at the bottom of each of your thread posts. Doing so will give you a backlink each time you post, or respond on someone else's post. Like with article backlinks, forum readers will click thru if they find what your are saying to be worthwhile. There are forums on just about any topic you can imagine and tons on very general ones.

Get Your Backlinks Indexed

Why Not Give Your Backlinks Every Chance To Work For You?

Most people doing their own SEO work will post thousands of backlinks, but never take a few minutes to see if they are benefiting. But how can you be sure whether they are getting counted by Google or not?

There is no surefire method, but if you can get Google to index the pages where your backlinks are, the chances are good that they will count for you. As soon as you have posted a batch of backlinks, take the URLs and run them through a tool like Mass Blog Pinger. This will ping the URLs across multiple services while you are busy with other things.

Wait a few days, and check to see which ones are indexed. I use Andy Black's /indexchecker.info">Index Checker. It will spit out a list of the URLs still not indexed to be pinged again.

Now, go back to Step 1 and...

Lather...

Rinse...

Repeat...

SEO work is more about repetition and volume than anything else.

This lens is mostly about backlinking as this is where over 98% of your results will come from.

Enjoy!
