Having a strong agricultural economy the landscape is full of citrus, almond and olive trees, during January and February the light blossom aroma fills the air. The village of Arboleas is situated on the riverbank in the Almanzora valley, one of many small settlements along the course of the river. The Alcazaba, The fortress comprises of three areas. The earliest site has now become a pleasant formal garden, which was constructed over the original medieval buildings. At the extreme eastern end of the walls, yet another wall (built 1014 - 1028), reaching up to St Christopher's Hill, gave protection to the old city. A much later addition, about 1763, is the bell tower of Saint Mary the Great,used to warn the inhabitants of pirate attacks.

The Cathedral, has a fortress-like appearance due to its towers, merlons and protected paths, created to defend it from Mediterranean pirate invasions.

Due to the stunningly beautiful back drop of the rolling landscape, the area has also featured in many Hollywood films, that require the rustic idyllic setting this part of Spain offers. From James Bond to The Young Indiana Jones, Zorro, Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games, all filmed here, It is obvious with the amount of films that were filmed in the area even Hollywood loves this part of Spain with of course the most famous being the Spaghetti Westerns, in fact a massive tourist attraction in the area with three diffrent sets. There are many great beaches to choose from along the coastline, are within easy driving distance. Villaricos has a small harbour and is surrounded by quiet bays in which to soak up the sun. San Juan de los Terreros is a typical spanish beach resort with sandy beaches and plenty of restaurants and bars in the town.
Garrucha is a lovely fishing port, also boasting wide open beaches, shops and fabulous restaurants. Vera is famous for its naturist policy.
