"Though I was born and raised in Canada, I have British parents - my mum is Scottish and my dad's English - so I've lived here on and off all my life. My first birthday was celebrated up in Scotland. I obviously feel very connected to the UK. I would watch any British comedy that made its way over to Canada, no matter how bad it was - just because of that sense of connection. I remain a very proud Canadian. It's Canada first and foremost in every sense of the word but I live in London now and I've completely embraced the culture here. Professionally this will be where I am for the rest of my career.
As far as my chosen form of comedy - one-liners - goes, I've been made aware over here of the fact that this is my "style" whereas it is just what I've always done. I don't know if the one-liner is making a comeback. I think its always been there. If you look at the Les Dawsons and the Tommy Coopers - they are timeless. So if they're timeless it never went away, right?
I love the impersonality of what I do. You have absolutely no idea who I am when I'm performing. I want to be anonymous. All I want to do is make you laugh from the moment I step on stage to the moment I leave. I don't need you to know my political views - that's too self-indulgent. How dare I hold a stage for over an hour and pontificate! I just wouldn't do that. Some comedians get offstage and continue performing on Twitter. For me that's just another aspect of self-indulgence. I think: when it's over, it's over - I'm not your dancing monkey!"
