Letter: Ask yourself: Is the H1N1 'swine flu' vaccine safe? (Aug. 20)
For those considering rolling up their sleeves for an H1N1 shot this year, consider this: The Food and Drug Administration has given vaccine manufacturers the green light to inject you and your family with untested drugs.
The fast-tracking of these vaccines means they will not be tested properly and are basically asking you to be their guinea pigs. Health officials admit that the clinical tests are about dosage amounts and not safety. So the new vaccines being approved for the fall campaign have the potential to cause severe harm or death due to the lack of safety testing.
The Health and Human Services secretary granted legal immunity to vaccine manufacturers during the stage 6 pandemic declared by the WHO. Even more troubling than the new vaccines and antivirals themselves is the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) declared by the FDA, which enables the use of expired stockpiles of Tamiflu or Relenza and non-compliance with labeled requirements.
The EUA authority will also permit the FDA to allow the use of "unapproved or uncleared medical products" during an established emergency. The WHO even admitted the swine flu vaccine may be unsafe because it allows firms to bypass large-scale human trials. Baxter pharmaceutical, one of the firms contracted to produce the H1N1 vaccine, recently sent vaccines that contained the live avian flu virus to 18 countries. A virologist stated that this could have caused a pandemic if injected into a human subject.
The question is about safety. Do your homework and look beyond the fear mongering.
Doug Huntley, Corvallis
Editor's note: Charlie Fautin, deputy director of the Benton County Health Department, noted in response to this letter that two kinds of flu vaccine will be administered this year: The first is a vaccine for general influenza that will be available in September. The one for the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, still is being tested. People older than 6 months are encouraged to get the general vaccine when it becomes available and to obtain the H1N1-specific vaccine when its testing is completed. No untested vaccine will be administered.
To prevent catching or spreading of the H1N1 virus, use regular precautions such as frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizer. Those who become ill should remain home to avoid spreading the flu or colds of any kind.

- Pandemic Flu Shots - What Are Your Rights?
by Alan Phillips, J.D. and the Legal Group at PandemicFluOnline.com
This document addresses the boundaries of your right to refuse H1N1 (pandemic swine flu) shots in the United States, should they be mandated in the near future in the context of a declared emergency pandemic. Rights can vary dramatically in this context from those associated with routine immunizations.
There really aren't many short-answer questions about vaccine exemption rights.[1] Your rights, and the appropriate actions to take, depend on the specific facts in your situation. For non-emergency situations, there is a body of information to digest in order to be able to assess your rights and how best to assert them, just as there is with the larger question of whether or not to vaccinate or delay vaccinations with regard to the risk of adverse events from the vaccines. The best sources for that are a knowledgeable attorney and The Authoritative Guide to Vaccine Legal Exemptions.
There are three fundamental questions concerning your right to legally refuse emergency pandemic vaccines:
1) Personal Rights: Where is the boundary between the government's right to impose vaccinations for the presumed benefit of society and your right as an individual to refuse them?
2) Lines of Authority: What governmental entities have authority to require immunizations and enforce immunization mandates, under what conditions?
3) Consequences: What are the potential consequences for refusing immunizations in emergency situations? and

For the last few days, we've been bombarded with news about the swine flu outbreak and how we may face a global pandemic anytime soon. What can we do about it? Should we accept what the media is pushing down on us? Is this situation really so serious as "they" say it is? How do you feel about all this situation?
Personally, I think, the most important thing of all is NOT to be afraid, try to stay in the "observer" mode and prepare, just in case, if the worst case scenario becomes a reality. You never know%u2026 - 2,000 students at US university report swine flu symptoms - Yahoo! News
