The X-Files

So what was this show that started out in the Fall of 1993, that later turned into a huge succes. Who is the mysterious Fox Mulder and Dana Skully? The X-Files originally started in 1993 by Chris Carter the creator of The X-Files, The Lone Gunman, Millennium, and Harsh Realms. Originally broadcasted Friday nights on Fox Entertainment channel, this series was about F.B.I. agent Fox Mulder (played by David Duchovny) who discovered a series of unsolved cases pushed away in a dark dusty file cabinet. Many regarded these files as a sort of laugh or waste of time. These unsolved cases where named the X-Files because the majority of them where unexplainable or involved aliens, monsters, UFOs, yetis and other phenomenon that where not believed by the general public or agents. Mulder started out in the violent crimes division and was so successful that he was generally given free reign to do as he wished. Soon after delving into the X-Files he emerges with the office nickname of "Spooky". But Mulder has more than just fascination with the X-Files. His early childhood is its own X-File with his sister Samantha being abducted by aliens from their home late one night when he was only eight years old. This experience will stick with him and haunt him through most of his career in the F.B.I. But the F.B.I. isn't really interested in hearing the truth about the X-Files and soon sends Dana Skully (played by Gillian Anderson) as a spy to report what Mulder is really up to. Skully is a hard fact science believer, who doesn't share the same viewpoints as Mulder concerning the

unexplained. Fox Mulder with his basement office is one of the few oddball characters that you will see on most dramas that can still kick-ass. Even with such an offbeat personality, Mulder still graduated at the top of his class in Quantico and received his education at the prestigious Oxford University. Dana Skully who majored in forensic pathology with a degree in medical science prefers to stick to the cold hard facts of science and rationale. Together they make an interesting combination with Mulder to provide the quirky explanations of the cases and Skully to preform the autopsies and to later provide grounding and more acceptability to Mulders theories. Early on, Skully is very unsure herself yet at times intrigued with Mulder's take-action approach. Mulder is already used to being assigned new partners who do not hold the same beliefs as him, but he seems to enjoy what he is doing far too much to really be bothered if his new
partner is inconvenienced by his questionable beliefs. Mulder also has the useful ability of befriending the local fruit-cake natives without first coming off as a believer himself. Together they fight aliens and unearth new X-Files and even manage to have a blockbusting movie. Released in 1998, "Fight The Future" finds them going to Antarctica to discover a frozen enormous spacecraft. After the movie, the season continues for a total of an astounding nine seasons. By that time it has already picked up a major audience up until its cancellation in January of 2001. This series creates a successful mix of SCI-FI and drama that is rarely ever seen on network television. Even now in 2006 you can still catch X-Files on more than one network in re-run including but not limited to FX, SCI-FI, TNT and SPIKE TV. Current interest involves a web site, a mailing list, related products, and the possibility of a second movie at some point.
