Columbia Greenway
Westfield's Rail Trail

The Columbia Greenway is the name chosen for Westfield's RailTrail. Currently in its design phase, the trail when completed will extend from the Westfield River to the Southwick town line. The Columbia Greenway will traverse Downtown Westfield on an elevated line with bridge crossings of all streets in the Downtown. The trail will tie into the Southwick trail to the Connecticut state Line and then become the Farmington Valley Greenway extending to New Haven, Connecticut. At a future date the Columbia Greenway will extend northward from the Westfield River to eventually tie into the Northampton Bike Trail. While the construction of the Westfield section of the trail network is still a few years away, sections are complete in Easthampton, and Northampton, MA and Granby, Simsbury, Avon, Collinsville, and Farmington CT.

Stanley Park

"Frank Stanley Beveridge was born in Canada on April 17, 1879. In March 1900, having traveled from Pembrooke Shores, near Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Frank arrived at Mount Hermon School in Northfield, Massachusetts with only a quarter, a dime and one Canadian dollar bill. He remained at Mount Hermon School for three years. Following Mount Hermon School, Frank moved to upstate New York, married, and he and his wife, Theresa, had two daughters. Later, Mr. Beveridge joined the Fuller Brush Company in Hartford, Connecticut, where he became Director of Sales.
In 1933, Beveridge founded Stanley Home Products, Inc. in Westfield, Massachusetts (The Enesco Group, Inc.)
In 1947, Frank Stanley Beveridge founded the Frank Stanley Beveridge Foundation, Inc., a trust. In 1949, he established the Stanley Park of Westfield, Inc. on twenty-five acres of land in Westfield, Massachusetts. Today, Stanley Park consists of nearly 300 acres of formal gardens, a carillon tower, trails, sports fields and a substantial nature area.
It is our Mission to perpetuate our founder's dreams by maintaining Stanley Park as a refuge of physical and spiritual beauty, where families and individuals may enjoy gardens, trails, music, educational, sporting and cultural activities in secure and peaceful surroundings, and to retain a habitat for the wildlife of the area."

Amelia Park

Amelia's Garden, a 1.3 acre memorial park, was built to provide a location for positive recreational alternatives in memory of Albert Ferst's wife Amelia. Throughout the garden, one can find 64 beds blooming with a variety of annual plants, a fountain, a gazebo, and a waterfall, to name a few. In addition to being a wonderful place to relax and enjoy an afternoon, Amelia's Garden also hosts a variety of special events. The most popular event is Musical Moments, which takes place every Tuesday night in the summer. Amelia's Garden is also available for weddings and social functions. The gentleman responsible for overseeing Amelia's beautiful sights is Bob Kamm.
Amelia Park Ice Arena
Amelia Park Ice Arena is a multi-million dollar ice arena/sports complex and memorial garden, financed by Westfield, Massachusetts philanthropist Albert F. Ferst, in memory of his wife Amelia. Throughout her lifetime, "Millie's" intent was to give back to the community, especially the youth, in providing positive opportunities for them. Mr. Ferst shares his wife's ideals. In 2000, the Ice Arena that Millie envisioned several years ago became a reality. Unfortunately, her early demise prohibits this gracious lady from seeing one of the Ferst's many generous acts come to fruition. The Albert & Amelia Ferst Operating Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit entity, was formed in 1998, with the expressed purpose of building this recreational facility and garden in her memory.
The main building is a 47,000 square foot facility which includes a NHL sized ice rink with seating for 600; a figure skating lounge; three party rooms; a skate rental and sharpening area; limited pro-shop; four locker rooms and a food concession area. A 65' x 170' outside inline skating rink is located next to the main building and near Amelia's Garden, a one acre memorial park.

The profusion of black squirrels in Westfield is a curious phenomenon. As the story goes, they were first brought here in 1948 as a gift to Frank Stanley Beveridge, the founder of Stanley Park. Six of the squirrels were released in the park, where they thrived. Their population grew, and today they can be found all over Westfield, Massachusetts and the Pioneer Valley.
