Things to do in Cohasset, MA

Night life, restaurants, and activity in and around town

cohasset harborCohasset is your typical, quiet New England coastal town. It has no major highway that runs through town, save for the relatively minor Route 3A. This means you won't find big chains restaurants or even fast food. The town has the ocean to rely on, and that's all it needs.

If you're in Cohasset and you're looking for something to do, here are some things you should add to your list:

1. Visit Minot's Ledge Lighthouse. You can't visit the actual lighthouse, per se, because it's in the middle of the ocean, but you can visit Government Island, where one of the lanterns from the lighthouse is kept. You can also get a good view of the lighthouse from here.

2. Go to a live event at the Music Circus. There are plenty of well known musical acts and comedians that visit here year after year.

3. Get food at the Red Lion Inn. This is perfect for couples, but they also have a tavern that has great food and beer.

4. Head to Hull for the day. This small town to the north has its own giant beach, Nantasket, which spans for miles. The end of the peninsula offers a gorgeous view of Boston.

5. Drive south to Cape Cod. It's only 45 minutes away, and has some of the most scenic beaches and shoreline on the east coast.

Minot's Ledge Light

Off the coast of Cohasset - famous Minot's Ledge Lighthouse

Right off the coast of Cohasset is Minot's Ledge, a rocky shoal that has shipwrecked many vessels over the past centuries. To combat the increasing number of shipwrecks, a lighthouse was built on this rocky shoal to warn marine vessels of the rocky shores that lie ahead. The lighthouse that stands today is the second lighthouse built on the location. Learn what happened to the first one, and where you can find a replica of the lantern room right in the town of Cohasset on this page:

First settled in the late 1600s and incorporated in 1770, the small seacoast town of Cohasset became an important center for fishing and shipbuilding during the great age of sail. As the maritime era declined in the late 19th century, wealthy Bostonians found Cohasset's cool ocean breezes, the natural beauty of its rockbound shoreline, and its protected coves and harbor ideal for summer recreation. Amateur and professional theater groups flourished in this summer colony. Through vintage photographs, Cohasset covers all this and more seaside hotels and summer cottages, village life and old-time merchants, patriarchs and politicians. Personalities abound, such as Philander Bates, a shoemaker who held almost every elected and appointed town office, and financier Clarence W. Barron, who entertained Calvin Coolidge at his Oaks Farm in 1925.
