Norwell, Massachusetts is a small residential town on the South Shore of Massachusetts between Boston and Cape Cod. Norwell is northeast of Hanover, west of Scituate, south of Hingham, and north of Pembroke, making it one of the South Shore's most central towns. Norwell is known for its proximity to the North River, which much of Main St., or Route 123, runs alongside. Norris Reservation

Norwell's beautiful reservation on the North River

The Norris Reservation in Norwell has some really beautiful grounds to explore, one of the best on the South Shore. The reservation has parking available near the Norwell post office near Norwell Center. From this entrance, you can walk through the forest to the many acres of forests and ponds. Eventually, the paths will lead to the North River. Along the river, you can spot an old mill, and a large marshy area overlooking the river. This is a great spot to hike and enjoy nature, and it's completely free. Just pick up after your dog!

The North River in Norwell starts in Hanover, Massachusetts, and ends on the Scituate/Marshfield line, emptying into the Massachusetts Bay.

Neighboring towns to Norwell, Massachusetts

Norwell is located 20 miles south of Boston, and is bordered by most of the towns on the South Shore, including Rockland, Hanover, Pembroke, Marshfield, Scituate, and Hingham. The North River forms the boundary between Norwell and Pembroke, and also between Norwell and Marshfield. You can get to Norwell by taking Route 3 to the Hanover exit (exit 12). From there, follow Route 53 north to Route 123 East. This will lead directly into Norwell center.

A quick drive down up Route 53 to Route 228 South towards Rockland will lead you to the Route 3 overpass, along with the hotels along Route 228 in Rockland. The Holiday Inn is located on Route 228 (Hingham St.) in Rockland. It is directly off Route 3, convenient to both Boston and Cape Cod. Also nearby is the Italian restaurant Bella's, as well as many more restaurants further east on 228 heading towards Hingham.

The Comfort Inn is also located on Route 228, across from the Dunkin' Donuts in Rockland. Located on Hingham Street, this is also right off the highway and adjacent to the other hotels in Rockland.

Norwell was originally part of the maritime town Scituate, an area that boasted a thriving shipbuilding industry for over 200 years on the North River. In 1848, taxpayers from the south end of Scituate wanted more control over their finances and voted for secession. This area, originally known as South Scituate, was renamed Norwell in 1888 after the town's generous benefactor Henry Norwell. What remains of this quintessential South Shore community are many charming neighborhoods such as Ridge Hill, which has remnants of a commercial era long since passed, and Norwell Village, with a quaint small-village atmosphere that survives today.
