Wardsboro 4th of July Celebration

Celebrate Independence Day in Wardsboro, Vt. The 4th of July would be nothing without a parade, marching bands and lots of arts and craft exhibits. Wardsboro Fourth of July Street Fair has it all. It is the oldest running fair in Vermont and the very best fair that you could ever attend.

I have been going to the Wardsboro Fourth of July Fair since I was born. In fact my Grandparents helped to found the event. If you have never visited Wardsboro this July would be an ideal time. If you are looking for a taste of small town New England, Wardsboro is the place to go. Come celebrate the Fourth of July with me in Wardsboro, Vt...

Everyone gets up early as the fair actually begins by about 7 am and is all over by 3. There are booths all along South Hill road with arts and crafts, hotdogs and people. There are more people in Wardsboro on the Fourth of July than on all other days of the year combined. Everyone is happy, strolling around, greeting neighbors, visitors and friends not seen since last year. You shouldn't miss this wonderful, hometown fair.

Have no fear... the snow will certainly be gone by the fourth of July :)

Celebrating 4th of July in Wardsboro

Some people may think that being in a large city to celebrate Independence day is the place to be, but I have found cities to be much too impersonal. When you come to Wardsboro you can easily join in. Anyone who wants to help only needs to ask. Bring a lawn chair to sit next to the parade route or volunteer to help at one of the many booths. Would you rather create a float and march in the parade or stand on the sidelines and applaud the creativities of those who did? Participation of any kind is always welcome. Come to Wardsboro, Vermont this year to celebrate a tradition that has been going on in our town for over 65 years!

You will want to bring a folding chair, an umbrella and some sunscreen. Stake out your spot along the parade route early. My favorite spot is near the Wardsboro Town Hall where our representative announces the floats, bands and other participants.

Remember, as in Camelot where it never rains til after sundown, The Wardsboro 4th of July Street Fair has never been rained out but in case of sprinkles or to protect yourself from the sun, it's wise to bring an umbrella. The umbrella below protects from UV rays. For the same reason sunscreen is highly advised.

Now you are well-prepared for when my dad rings the church bell to signal the parade to start.

Who will attend the Wardsboro 4th of July Street Fair?

On 4th of July, look for me at the White Elephant Booth. We have everything you need. Just take a look at the purple glass eggplant. I bet you don't have one of those. Everyone needs a Purple Glass Eggplant, an incomplete set of dishes, a nifty looking teapot or a whatchamacallit to set on your coffee table as a conversation starter at your next party. Where else can you find these fine items except at the Wardsboro 4th of July Elephant Booth?

Wondering? Have you been to Wardsboro?

05355 Zipcode

Wardsboro was a wonderful town to grow up in. The first zipcode I ever learned was 05355. I remember the day that the message came in the mail that we needed to start putting the zipcode on envelopes. My Dad was reading the letter to my Mom. Up until that time it was only necessary to write Wardsboro, Vt. under the name of the person you wanted to write a letter to.

Have you ever been to my hometown?

  • ChrisDay Mar 29, 2011 @ 9:53 pm | delete
Interesting read, thanks. No, sadly I've not been and probably never shall, now. Wrong side of the 'Pond'. Sorry, I could participate in none of your polls.

I have been to Wardsboro, VT and I grew up there and went to the one room school house up on the hill.
  • guardianstar77 Feb 5, 2011 @ 9:05 am | delete
No, I have never been there. I do hope to visit Vermont in the future; I may just look you up! I could not participate in a couple of your polls because they are geared towards people who have actually be to Wardsboro. Perhaps you should include a "Sorry, but I've never visited" options. Great review of your little town.
  • rwoman Nov 10, 2010 @ 10:39 am | delete
We have friends who live nearby so we might think about timing a visit!
  • Gloria Jul 22, 2010 @ 8:42 am | delete
I used to live in Wardsboro at a very young age and grew up there until 9. I went to the one room schoolhouse across Bridge street up until 4th grade when we moved away. I lived in the what is called the Twin House which is apart now. I love Wardsboro and wish I could live there now.
  • Evelyn_Saenz Jul 22, 2010 @ 10:46 am | delete
My grandfather also lived in that house for a time. Wardsboro was a wonderful place to grow up. Did you have Mary Dewey for a teacher?
  • Gloria Jul 28, 2010 @ 12:53 pm | delete
Hi, Who was your grandfather? I must have had Mary for a teacher; it was so long ago. I love that house we lived in. I definitely will go back to the parade next year.

This photograph, taken in 1915 shows Wardsboro the way it looked when my grandfather would go to Square Dances at the Town Hall. This is the old Town Hall that burned not long after 1915. The new one has a pointed porch roof with no balcony. On 4th of July, you will find pies and baked goods in the Town Hall all baked with loving hands by the men and women of Wardsboro.
