The loveliest rural golf hole around

The world in Clonakilty West Cork a photographers dream
Now I have played on and seen in books, television, and films some really lovely golf courses. Leopard Rock in the Vumba in Zimbabwe springs to mind. So does Sun and the Lost City in South Africa. Scotland, England, America and so many other beautiful places and courses.
Consequently it came as a big surprise when I went to watch my son play the other day. Coming up to the eight hole, he said to me," Dad, this is my favourite hole, out of all the courses I have played on."
As a consequence of old age and a varied life, I cynically thought to myself, it must be dead easy. How wrong I was, how delighted I was, to turn a corner, and come across this gem. A pure delight. I will endeavour to show you this, and then hopefully.
Let battle commence.

The reason for the duel

I read this great book as part of English Literature, in my last year at high school. Not only was it thought provoking, but it was made especially so because our English teacher was passionate about this, and he was so eloquent about it. He always maintained that we as kids were the last bastion against allowing this type of thing to happen. How right he was.
One of the things I remember most was against brainwashing. Namely, two plus two equals five. Well does it?
I thought about it after going around this golf course with my son. You see it is only a nine hole course. You play the same holes again on the back nine, just have a different tee position on the same hole.
So when we reached the eight hole on the first nine it was number eight, correct. However when we played the same eight holes on the next round it was seventeen. How could this be.? The way I looked at is was, eight plus eight equals sixteen, eight times two equals sixteen, so how on Earth do we get seventeen, unless of course, two plus two equals five.
No doubt there is a simple explanation for this, but at this time for the life of me I cannot figure it out. No doubt because I'm possibly a bit slow? I relish your contribution to this.
How is eight plus eight seventeen?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byAh! it's so simple man, please explain

@ Puzzlemaker. I sort of get it so you play another eight but ten plus eight equals seventeen. Just having fun, but I'm lost.

Are you pulling my leg Spook? Sounds like: Hole 8 is 8, correct. Then you play hole 9. Then you start back over at Hole 1 (which is now actually 10) and play so on until 8=17 and then finally 9=18. Is that right Spook?

The only way this could be true is if a person truly believed this to be true. If I could not persuade a person that it was otherwise then to them 8 plus 8 would be 17. Then again, I could be thoroughly wrong.. LOL.. =)

8 Plus 8 my friend can only be 16 if that is what one truly believes it be. If I cannot convince a person otherwise then to that person, that is what it is.... Or I could be wrong...LOL =)

Yikes! you got me here
Sojourn says:
Huh! I see how you get 17 only if I count out the first 9 and the 2nd nine on my fingers...you had to be there. Who'd a thunk a logic problem like this would sneak in amongst a lens on golf??? LOL!

Small beginnings here, but it's about getting in to the swing of things. Come and join in the fun. Better still, next time you find a really lovely golf hole, then why not take a couple of pictures of it, and add it here?
If you are not a golfer, then perchance your husband, or son, or daughter could do it for you. Welcome to anybody from anywhere in the world.
Come on now people, lets get them rolling in and then we will have a poll and vote for the best.

- Good hole, nice course. By chance, while holidaying in Clonakilty many years ago, I played the course with my wife and son. Often tried to remember the name of this course -thanks for the reminder.

- I don't play but my husband is an avid golfer. At first I ran from the room when he'd watch a tournament on the golf channel. Then I began watching from a distance. Now I get a bit disappointed if there isn't a good tournament to watch for a few hours on a the weekend. Why? I love the courses! The water, the plants, the views. Addicting. :)

- It looks beautiful -- but hey, I live in British Columbia, Canada. It's God's country. I'm spoiled by beautiful scenery and beautiful golf courses! Seriously, your pictures are gorgeous.,

- Lovely, indeed! I'm not a golfer but have been passing by another lovely golf hole in Ireland a couple of times. Have a look at Carne Golflinks next time you are in the vicinity of Belmullet (Co. Mayo). It's right on the wind-swept sand dunes of the ocean with fantastic (and very rural) views. Sort of like Pebble Beach for commoners... ;)

- I haven't seen anything nicer than this golf course. Honestly, I'm not a golfer but that doesn't matter. This is just beautiful landscape - golfing or not.

- Great job Kevin. You always lend interesting insight to your lenses with your unique gift of description and the way you opened this lens up is a good example. I've been fortunate to play and/or attend tournaments at some wonderful courses over the years. Amen corner in Augusta has to be my favorite (not played there), but Harbor Town, Pinehurst, The Ocean Course @ Kiawah, Quail Hollow, Sugarloaf and The Atlanta Country Club are also great. Some lesser known courses here in the Carolina's like Grandfather Mountain, Roaring Gap, Hound Ears, Chanticleer, Charleston Country Club and Wade Hampton are also among the most picturesque I've ever seen.or played and there is a higher concentration of golf courses along the coast of the Carolinas than anywhere else in the world and many of them are primo layouts. One Interesting one is Legends in Myrtle Beach which has replica holes from famous courses around the world. Will try to get some pics from a few around here soon.

- I am a golfer myself, well, more of a chopper and a shanker, but a golfer nonetheless. I have played all over the U.S. Some of the most beautiful courses I have ever played have been the famous home of the Nissan Open The Riviera, The TPC at Herron Bay Florida, and the courses in the Gaylord Mountains of Michigan. However, Lisselaan looks to be absurdly lush and beautiful as well. Don't know if I even want to dig my divots into it!
