A Purpleography

I've always liked the colour purple, even though you won't find much of it in my home and it's not a colour I would wear now.

When I was (much) younger, I had the most wonderful pair of purple suede knee high boots and I once had a purple fleece, but now it doesn't really figure in my wardrobe. Perhaps it's an age thing or maybe I just haven't seen anything in the colour that I like but you can be sure I wear my Purple Stars with pride.

Squidoo awards Purple Stars to lenses which are considered to be good quality. You can learn more about Purple Stars here.

Below the Guestbook are some interesting books, all to do with Purple, of course. I absolutely had to include Octavia and her Purple Ink.

The Colour Purple

I know The Colour Purple is a book but that's not what I'm talking about here. Every colour has meaning and associations.

Purple is associated with Royalty, wealth, luxury because it was, at one time, an expensive colour to produce and therefore only affordable by a few individuals who would, of course, have been the wealthiest in the land.

Purple is associated with the 7th Chakra in healing, the top of the head, and represents strength, spirituality, meditation and passion. Purple is also often associated with mysticism and inner wisdom.

What an excellent colour for an award.

"Womanist is to feminist as purple is to lavender"

- Alice Walker (author of The Color Purple.

Gardening and Nature

Even as a child I was keen on gardens. Perhaps it was because of the gardens both my Grandfathers kept, where they each grew a selection of flowers and quantities of vegetables. One in particular had only a very small garden but still managed to grow a good amount of produce and, amogst other flowers, the prettiest pansies I have ever seen.

The first garden I created was a one foot wide strip, against the wall, just outside our small, concrete back yard where we lived in the North of England. I was eight years old and I had found a dump where people had discarded various household objects and a lot of garden "rubbish". In amongst it all I found a broken sheperdess ornament and a tatty chalk black panther, I also found many flowering plants which had been cleared out of gardens all around. I helped myself and soon had my own little border.

I would encourage every parent to let their child grow their own little patch of garden at the youngest age, it's not only good for self esteem but it will also foster a delight in and understanding of Nature at a young age. As a child grows and learns, a Nature Table is a must and can provide inspiration for all manner of artisitic pursuits.

Purple Lensography

Probably the most appreciated Purple Star I have is the one I received for my lensography. There are so many lensographies out there that it really is flattering to have yours chosen as an example..

Recycling / Upcycling

Recycling and upcycling are terms you might be forgiven for thinking were invented in the last couple of decades. Well, ok maybe the 'upcycling' word was but the idea is far from new.

It's really only in the second half of the 20th century that the 'throw-away' society appeared, until then, almost all items would have been recycled as a matter of course and for various reasons. Some people recycled items because they simply couldn't afford to buy new items, some recycled becuse it was just what you did, passing on items you were done with to those who could use them or remodelling items to make them new again.

After WWII mass production got into full swing and our shops were flooded with cheap goods from many foreign countries, prices of goods and products were forced down and it seemed there was no point any more in recycling anything when new replacements were so affordable.

Now we are more aware of the conditions in which those ultra cheap commodities were produced and we are also more aware that this small planet has very finite resources. If we don't recycle everything we possibly can then not very far down the road we're going to find ourselves in a situation where anything new will be beyond the purchasing power of the vast majority of people.

If you can't re-use something don't throw it away, there are people who could use it. See if you have a local Freecycle and if there isn't one in your area, think about starting one.

Hobbies - Medium Sized Collectables

Dollhouses and dollhouse miniatures aren't just collectables for women and girls, there are quite a few men who love dollhouses too. Perhaps for them it's more the architectural aspect or period room settings and decor but it may be just as sentimental as any lady's dollhouse collection.

I'm guessing that most girls wanted a dollhouse when they were little, or they had one, in much the same way that many young lads wanted train sets, and I worry that the modern day craze for electronic gizmos and gadgets will bring a decline in the popularity of the traditional dollhouse.

There really is nothing nicer than a good old wooden dollhouse, equipped with period furniture etc. It's a peep into the past, a miniature museum.

Small Collectables

The small collectables series of lenses has coughed up two Purple Stars for me. In the entire series of lenses, which will probably expand a little more, I cover a wide range of collectable items which could easily be kept in shoeboxes or otherwise take very little space to display.

Really, this is with modern living in mind. I know some folks live in apartments which aren't much bigger than shoeboxes, but everyone has room for a precious collection of small pieces.

You might find some great ideas for children to start collections among the group of small collectable lenses.

Personal Experience

Writing about personal experiences can be difficult but everyone who shares their story of childhood abuse is helping to raise awareness of not only the extent of this abuse but also the effect it has on the abused child.

This isn't something which goes away. It isn't like an illness from which you will recover. A child who has been abused suffers the effects for the rest of their life. Not only has their childhood innocence been stolen, their self image is destroyed and that is not something which is easily recovered.

It is only by being open about our experiences and telling how we have learned to live with what happened, overcoming the difficulties it caused us, that we can help those who are being abused now and tomorrow. Even where we have failed at times to deal with our horror, there are lessons for others (and us) to learn from those failings.

Recovery begins when we hand the guilt back to the ones who really own it.

Lens Of The Day

I don't expect to get too many Lens of the Day Awards, there really aren't very many handed out, so I thought I would sneak this one in here along with my Purple Stars.

Getting the Lens of the Day Award really is a 'woohoo' moment. It means that someone has really enjoyed your lens, has nominated it and then someone important a Squidoo has looked and agreed with them that your lens is special.

*** On the 17th of November 2008 my poetry lens was given Lens of the Day by Megan, Squidoo's Editor in Chief. I was (and still am) so chuffed about that, I just want to keep sharing the news.

*** My second LotD came on the 20th June 2011, Making a Wooden Spoon Doll was first published late on the 16th June and nominated by Graceonline who also has some wonderful lenses of her own.
