Miniature Artworks from 0ctavias0fferings
In modern life we don't tend to have large walls on which to hang works of art so if you have a love of paintings, miniature artworks can be a great way to satisfy your desires.
ACEO - art cards editions and originals - are always 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches and at this size you can easily accommodate a whole collection on one small wall or several themed collections in various rooms of your home.
Of course, if you are a dollhouse collector you can just as easily hang one of these artworks in the sitting room or bedroom of a 12th scale dollhouse and it immediately takes on the proportions of a major artwork.
It is also fair to say that for an artist in a modern flat or similar, there may not be the required space to set up a full studio and art cards can be a very satisfying outlet for creative urges which might otherwise be frustrated.
These miniature works are also referred to as ATCs, Artist Trading Cards, though the ATC is intended for trading rather than selling and some creators of ATCs frown on the practice of selling ACEOs.
My personal opinion is that this is a way of making original artworks readily available to everyone, regardless of their means.
All our cards are on a base of card stock, though other artists have used various materials such as leather, clay or metal. And most of the cards I create are 3D in effect.
I am reliably informed that there is a type of baseball card holder which is ideal for holding 3D art cards, currently I don't have any of my own art cards displayed but I do have deep frames which will accomodate multiple cards for when I get around to it.
I'll keep adding to this lens as I will be listing more art cards for sale on the auction site eBid so keep watching and I hope you enjoy or are amused by what you see appearing here.
Eventually all the cards will have descriptions and as many as I can will have short video clips.
Just a short note, Art Card Editions are usually prints of an original sold in art card size and on heavy card stock. All those I am currently showing are original, one of a kind art cards. Some of my cards form a series of original works.

Big Fish
This art card is now live in auction on eBid.
Made from lace over a foil background and painted, this fish is trying to investigate something interesting he has found hiding in the weed.
The lacy weed is supported on a series of clear faceted beads.

Little Fish
A group of tiny fish is feeding on some of the weed in my imaginary fishtank.
Made from lace over foil, these busy little fish don't take a lot of looking after.

Little boxes ...

The primary reason my little boxes came into being was that I needed a safe way to store the art cards and 'on the wall' wouldn't be an option.
Now, for every art card I create, I also make one of these little boxes.
Made in thin card, each takes an A4 sheet to provide the component parts. I wished I had thought of the little box solution when I first started with the art cards because I found myself needing to make two dozen in order to accommodate those art cards already completed.
Inside the box is a small card which is signed in a similar way to the back of the art card. The art card itself is wrapped in tissue beneath this.
The Elements of Nature

Each art card is 3D in effect. The pondweed on the fish is 'supported' on three clear crystal glass beads which reflect light back through the 'weed', the floral card has 'gems' set into the centre of each flower, the fiery butterfly is made with a body of ruby coloured glass beads supporting the upper wing and the bird is, of course, made using feathers - these are exotic feathers, perhaps golden pheasant.

A small centre 'button' completes the picture.
The Dancer in the Air

Fantasy Birds - The Dancer in the Air.
I hope that between the photos and the video you can see how the little heart shaped spots and the tiny mirror squares reflect onto the underside of and through the wing of the bird.
The Silver Lacewing

The Silver Lacewing Butterlfy uses beads, feathers and lace scraps with any other little bits and pieces I find around.
It's amazing how many small pieces of broken jewellery, odd buttons, beads and pieces of chain find their final use in an art card.
There will be more Lacewing Butterflies to come, if anyone has a favourite colour they would like to see a butterfly appear in, let me know and I'll see if I can oblige.
The Long-Tailed Lacewing

The Long-Tailed Lacewing butterfly has a fabulous gem of a body which catches the light, as does the crystal glass bead head. Beautiful reflections can be thrown around the room.

Quit Buggin' Me
... an original art card.
This art card was inspired by a recent attempt to do some gardening. There seemed to be several hundred flies suddenly appeared from nowhere as soon as I began to weed and they were the really annoying ones which insist on flying half a centimetre from your eyeball.I have some mosquito netting and I may just have to make myself an outfit with it, including hat and veil. Still, at least it did inspire something ... but the garden still needs weeded :(
No prizes for guessing how the title came about LOL

Various items were used in this collage, feathers, beads, metal gauze and string accounting for the major part of the work.
Created in May 2008.
The video directly below this module was shot in an attempt to show how the changing light affects the 'eyes' of the bug.
The Lacewing Butterfly

The Lacewing Butterfly is another art card created in May 2008.
We start to see the early butterflies here, in the Scottish Highlands, in the Spring but I thought it would be good to have a few butterflies all year round so I suspect this will be the first in a series of butterflies you will see here.

I used actual lace for the wings and painted it gold. The head is a multi-faceted "crystal" glass bead which will change colour and flash bright spots as the angle of light changes on the surfaces; the body is a "nugget" shaped bead; the feelers are beads and wound strands of twine, all finished in metallic gold acryllic.
I like working with acrylic paints as I'm always impatient for the result and the brand I use dries very quickly, allowing me to express myself in a very spontaneous way.
The Nectar Gatherer

The Nectar Gatherer, May '08
A painted black background forms the base for this collage of feathers, bead and twig. A variety of feathers have been used here.

I "inherited" a bundle of feathers, including quite a few exotics, which had previously been used for tying fishing flies, sadly I don't have one of those nifty vices for the purpose of fly-tying (and I don't think my fingers would let me do that anyway) so I was a bit stumped what to do with them. They were put away for years and forgotten about until I was hunting for bits and pieces to make art card collages.
Feathers are wonderful to work with but it can take a while to sort through and find just the right feather for the job at hand.
Catching a Snack
Catching a Snack, May '08A fly wanders too close to this little bird and risks become a tasty snack.
Again, the background is painted with acrylic and I feel the bright red allows these feathers to stand out on the card.

Courtship Display
Courtship Display, May '08Fluttering his wings and calling out in the hopes of attracting a lady, this little bird in his bright colours will put on a display for you.

The Singer
The Singer, May '08A crested bird sings for the love of it on his favourite perch.
An assortment of feathers, finished in acrylic paints.

Pretty Boy
Pretty Boy, May 08I hope that in the video below you can get some idea of how these beautiful feathers have such a sheen that they will reflect back to you in various ways whatever light falls on them.
The background is acrylic paint.

Red Letter Day
Red Letter Day October '07One thing I love about art card collages is that you can use just about anything on them. I created the miniature pen, pencil etc and have tried to give an impression of what it's like on the days I'm packaging items to send to buyers ... actually, it's usually spread all over the floor in neat little piles while I sort it into boxes LOL

Out of the Blue
Out of the Blue October '07You don't get to my age without accumulating all manner of bits and pieces of jewellery, unstrung beads, decorative attachments which have become detached and snapped chains, they all have their use somewhere.
It pays to be a hoarder sometimes LOL

Celebrations
Celebrations October '07All those delightful little hearts and stars scattered on tables at weddings - seemed a shame to me that they would end up simply swept away so I 'saved' a few and for all those other ladies who have 'saved' the same little favours, this is an idea you can try for yourself.

Chocolate Box Indulgence
Chocolate Box Indulgence October '07My idea of a good Friday night is settling down with a box of chocolates (Google "Hotel Chocolat" - they run the Chocolate Tasting Club which delivers to your door the most supmtuous selections of chocolates) and a movie or relaxing music. Of course, it doesn't happen very often but this card is intended to capture that feeling of luxury.
Across the centre that is genuine demerara sugar, all sealed under varnish to preserve it.

Purple Peace
Purple Peace October '07The edging is rainbow coloured confetti, the central motif is a found object surrounded by radiating beads, the pattern formed by these contained / seperated from the confetti by a silver chain.
You can view this card as the complexity of yourself in the centre with rays emanating from you filling the space between yourself and the outside World with that peace we all crave.
Or is that too pretentious LOL

Ruby Tuesday
Ruby Tuesday October '07Chips of ruby coloured beads make up a floral pattern. The background is a metallic silver acrylic paint which I feel sets off the design nicely and encourages the light to reflect back through the bead chips.
All sealed under a clear varnish.

In Foam Kissed Sand
Life's a Beach ... now you can own one.
Here's your chance to have your very own corner of Scotland, sands and shells from Scottish beaches are used on these cards. There are five in this particular series, each of which is signed on the back and bears one line of a poem which is seven lines long. The final two lines are on the 6th Art Card which will remain in my collection.
The full poem reads ...
In foam-kissed sand, a glint, a treasure hint,
Pebbles carried from the hills to mix with shells,
Sea-gems ebb and flow, between my toes.
Each new tide may leave behind that precious find
And time is almost out of reach - on my beach.
Where does the water meet the land?
Deep in my heart - you understand.

The sand used here comes from a beach on the Moray Firth, close to a river mouth.
Shells from more than one Scottish beach.
Objets trouvés from various sources.
All the cards in this series were created in May '08

Beach Time

Life's a Beach - the verse
All my cards are titled, signed and dated on the reverse.

Weave - the Art Cards

Four Art Cards and a centre "button".
Each has a different weave on a smaller piece of card which has then been placed off-centre on the Art Card.
What looks almost black in the backgrounds is a midnight blue.
Sweet Blossom
Sweet Blossom
Sweet Blossom
Art Card 2.5 by 3.5 inches.
A bird is sitting on one of the branches of this blossom tree, has he spotted the snail creeping up the other side of the trunk?

The tiny shell of the snail is actually a miniscule seashell and was found on the Isle of Harris.

Sand from the Atlantic coast of the Isle of Harris.

- Wow, those are some darn fancy artcards, they're beautiful, congrats! I participated in an artcard exchange at wetcanvas.com once, it was hugely fun to make 25 cards and mail them around the world and have cards come trickling in from wherever... if I had more time I would do it again.

- How beautiful! I began making some art cards about 10 years ago but I never traded them, I was a bit shy about them. Now I don't know where they are but I have considered starting up again. I joined an ATC group on yahoo which is what inspired me. Your cards are absolutely gorgeous.
