Recycling is becoming increasingly essential if we are to live sustainably on this little planet. We can recycle or reuse much of what is currently thrown away and doing so has another benefit, it reduces the amount of waste which has to go to landfill.
Although governments can set targets for local authorities to achieve in terms of percentgae of waste recycled, really, it's up to us to keep the waste to a minimum by getting the maximum use from the items. It applies to furniture, clothing, the water we use, the food we eat, every aspect of our lives is touched by this.
Our small world is getting very crowded and at some point, if we're not very careful, there will not be enough water and food to go around. Frequent famines in Africa show that we are already on a knife edge and if, for any reason, crops should fail then we will all struggle.
I hope the lenses linked to here will give you some inspiration.

Super Household Saving Tips

My daughter and I were talking about this the other evening. She collects dollhouses and, having recently bought one of the older Triang number 50s, she was comparing it to a 1960s one and discovered that the quality had dropped. Of course, there a...
Some of the equipment you'll need
Recycling cloth and clothing
Some buttons make excellent decorative finishing on bags or hats, single earings and other oddities can be added to bags as dangles. The possiblities are really endless and I have no doubt I will be adding more lenses to this section.

Recycling sweaters into new accessories

Often a jersey or sweater will wear through at the elbows or develop a hole somewhere just through use. While smaller holes can be darned and elbows can be patched over, modern jerseys etc don't lend themselves to patching as it rather ruins th...

Making old clothes into funky bags

Free rag doll patterns and stitch diagrams
I made the rag dolls in three sizes, it's only a matter of scaling up the drawing. The small patterns for the animals are perfect for use in making up your own story sacks.
Use these lenses for ideas and have fun with it.

Simple Stitches

I decided that, to go along with my lenses about re-using cloth and clothes, it would be a good idea to make a lens showing some of the simpler hand and embroidery stitches. Many years ago when I was starting out with sewing of all kinds, I made my...

Making Rag Dolls and Soft Toys from Scrap Fabrics

The lens photo is one of a number of dolls I've made using up scraps of material. Some were given away as presents, many were sold and I have more pictures of them to add as time goes on. But I want to get you started on toy making - it really...

Recycling food?
A great deal of land is given over to agriculture and this can have serious consequences both for communities where the land is given over to a monoculture and for wildlife. We are far too wasteful with our resources. We throw away millions of tons of perfectly good food every year instead of using it up.
We have been spoiled for years. On the whole, the population was healthier in its eating habits during the years of World War Two, partly because luxury foods were very hard to come by and sugars and fats were rationed and partly because people were more active, working every available patch of ground to produce vegetables. Meat was rationed as well and I have no doubt that most of us eat far too much meat.
Below you'll find links to my lenses about food. You might be amazed what a sauce can do to transform a few leftovers into a very presentable meal.

Chicken leftovers - food for the imagination

Sadly, I know quite a few households who will have just one meal and perhaps a sandwich or light salad from a chicken. What a waste! Perhaps these folks don't realise just how much nutritious food is left on that chicken, even in the carcass you...
