What is a Lens?

You are looking at one right now! A lens is a single page about a specific topic. I was going to say that a lens is an article, but it can be much more than that: lenses often include images, videos, RSS feeds and visitor comments; they can even show, say, tweets from Twitter or t-shirts from Zazzle.

Why are they called lenses of all things? Simple. They gather all relevant information on a topic and focus it - just like a lens does! Nowadays a lens can be much more than an overview of a topic: it can be a heated debate, a collection of videos, a sports prediction page, or a survey. There are enough types of lenses on Squidoo to suit everyone!

Wait... What's "Squidoo"?

What is Squidoo?

You're on it right now! Squidoo is a collection of lenses - and much more. Squidoo allows you to write about the topics you like - create lenses on them, in other words - and share them with the world, as well as make money in the process! You will be rewarded for every sale made through your lens, and also simply for your lenses doing good and being visited a lot. Squidoo donates money to many charities, too - and you can contribute if you like by changing the royalty settings of your lenses!

Squidoo is not just an article directory - it's also a community of great, smart and cool people who created hundreds of thousands of great lenses - it's a community of lensmasters.

Wait... What's a "lensmaster"?

What is a Lensmaster?

A lensmaster is a member of Squidoo who has created at least one lens. I am a lensmaster. And you can become one, too - all you have to do is signup and start lenscrafting! I know, I know - it's all pretty confusing, but don't worry: there's plenty of very helpful resources that will explain everything you need to know about Squidoo. And if that's not enough, you can always ask your fellow lensmasters for help. First of all, you want to actually sign up (use the orange button) - then just check out the links below and dive right in!

Links and Resources for New Lensmasters

  • CALAMARI: The Official Squidoo How-To is an awesome e-book in .pdf format by the original squids: Megan Casey and Seth Godin. If you take 10 minutes of your precious time to read it, you will have a pretty good idea of what Squidoo is all about and how to start making great lenses!

  • Squidoo Answer Deck contains hundreds of how-to lenses run by community experts. Chances are, most of newbie questions have already been asked - and answered - before, so refer to this great resource when you need information.

  • SquidU is the forum where lensmasters hang out. This is the place to introduce yourself, ask for help and advice, brag about your awesome lenses, or just chat with your fellow squids.

And remember...

DON'T PANIC

Squidoo might seem a bit overwhelming at first. Don't worry - just try making your first lens, and it will all come to you in the process. You can always return to improve it later!
