Wow! Excellent post. Even the most common-sense advice is often ignored. It's nice to be reminded what makes sense and what makes money.

Reading this was really great. I see that I have to go back to the drwaing board, especially after reading this. Its funny, becasue one day I had a crazy looking picture of me on my Facebook page and a fellow who offered to be my marketgin mentor said that I should take it down becasue he said that he wouldnt buy anything from anyone who was looking the way I was in the picture. I thought that it was really funny but later on, I worte him back and thanked him tremendously. He said that he was even supprised that I would thank him for telling me off like that. In the end, I would ratehr for someone to hurt me with the truth than to try to ease them with a lie.

Hey Shannon, great job on the lens. I totally agree with what you said "People don't read websites, they scan them....". I'll try to keep mine precise. Can you visit my lens at http://www.squidoo.com/premjayaram and let me know what you think. I've just started squidoo and have not had much success with it yet. Kinda overwhelming sometimes.
I'm ok with blogs but when it comes to social networking sites, im just lost :)
    Thanks/Prem

This is an excellent lens. Being a writer, I tend to write and write and write in my lenses, and I'm getting rather irked that so many other people write a few short paragraphs, throw in massive amounts of links, and call it a good lens.

This lens has REAL content, not just links to other people's sites which actually contain the useful information. I did a lens myself on web design and I'm going to link your lens to mine because it's a good compliment and supplement to some of the things I'm preaching.

Great tips. I would also add that you should make it search engine friendly. Even if you do everything else right, if you don't get traffic, it won't matter.

Very top-notch advice Shannon -- I run a number of websites and made a decision this year to actually let one of them go at the end of the summer in that it no longer fit in with my 'plan' for my business. I also try to do an update/restructure annually and revisit the content more often than that. Actually blogs seem to be a better bet for me now.

***** hope you make it to the top 100. Do realize the competition gets stiff up there though. One of my lenses has hovered in the top 200 for ages. It dipped into the top 100 for a few days, and went right back into that top 200. Sales and referrals are ultimately more important than getting that top 100 spot. Which isn't to say that it isn't great to get there :)
  • Jun 22, 2008 @ 11:29 pm | delete
    Thanks for the lens

    Great common sense advice!

One of the problems these days is that 'common sense' isn't so common any more!

    Cheers Banjo Smyth
