Ten Best Rock Instrumentals of All Time.
Ranked #3,430 in Music, #97,007 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund, Petzone Dog Rescue
These really are fantastic instrumentals.
This list of ten Rock instrumentals are my personal favorites, I fully realize every ones tastes are different, and no doubt, I have left more than a few off of this page.
Maybe that will stimulate some conversation, and since I am a music lover of many different styles, maybe I will discover some new music.
I don't consider this list to be in any particular order, with the possible exception of Eruption, Wham, and Hideaway being at least in the top 5 for sure.
Certainly Eruption with the first real mastery of the finger tapping style, the fluid pentatonic runs and ultra fast alternate picking, I was only 8 years old when this tune came out, I can't Imagine what seasoned guitar players thought, who believed they had mastered their instrument,
Probably the same thing Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck thought when they saw Jimi Hendrix Live for the first time, Clapton stated that he became very depressed, and felt like giving up the guitar, I am paraphrasing there, but the point is, Van Halen was sending a message, That he was the new sheriff in town, and from then on, From a hard rock stand point, He was the man, And really I don't think any one has surpassed him, I know, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and even John Patrucci of Dream Theater have technically surpassed him possibly,
But are they house hold names 30 years later? Eruption was and is the Clarion call for lead guitarists, The other top choice for me are Wham by Lonnie Mack, Ever wonder why a Tremolo bar is Called a Whammy Bar, Lonnie Mack is the reason, beside Mack being One of the most underrated musicians in music history, ( a lot of that admittedly, is self inflicted due to his enigmatic disregard for the limelight ) in any case, Mack was one of the most gifted authentic blue eyed soul singers in history, and one of the first real innovators on rock guitar, Some one who really pushed ahead the Instrument, all of his early 60's instrumentals are worthy of notice, Wham and Memphis in particular.
Stevie Ray Vaughan it's often thought was most influenced by the great blues man Albert king the most, But a closer listen reveals Lonnie Mack as his bread and butter, especially his rhythm playing, unusual fingerings and improvisations, Vaughan also does a wonderful cover of wham himself.
Metallica
Orion
Orion, an instrumental from Metallica's third album Master of Puppets, displays many different moods, The best part of the song is the Bass interlude That leads to unison lead guitars harmonizing a beautiful melody. a real treat to hear, to realize you've been listening to one of the heaviest ,If not " the" heaviest metal album of all time. and they can play such a beautiful piece of music, It's really astounding when you consider how great and important this band was and is, to the Thrash/speed metal community.
Swoop in and grab a used iPod on the cheap.
METALLICA ORION LIVE
ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND
Mountain Jam
Bloated and way over blown ? nah, just sit back and lose yourself in this epically long instrumental, In fact its longer than every other tune on here combined. But if you like Bluesy Gut bucket Southern Rock playing , and high quality at that, this is for you.
SANTANA
Soul Sacrifice
I absolutely love this Latin Rock classic. Carlos Santana has the most envious guitar tone of all time, Such a simple concept ,adding the "Spanish tinge" to the blues scale, Which is what Carlos Santana was all about, This music could sure light a fire, Very sensual in nature.
GEORGE LYNCH (DOKKEN)
Mr. Scary
This guy George Lynch, is one of the true Hair metal guitar gods, He kind of gets lots in the shuffle, As well as his band Dokken, I always thought they had a real soulful sound, especially Don Dokken's underrated vocals, but The star was Lynch, and this rare instrumental, is a precision driven exercise in guitar mastery. Lynch was a shredder for sure, but he had some very unique phrasing and vibrato that I was, and still am, envious of.
EDGAR WINTER
Frankenstein
This keyboard instrumental is note worthy for the way Edgar Winter makes the synthesizer sound much like a guitar , his phrasing and attack, I am most struck at how ahead of it's time this was. It still sounds fresh and relevant today, incredible !
FREDDIE KING
Hide Away
Believe it or not, Freddie King was turned down by Leonard Chess of Chess records, saying he was not talented enough to work for the label, I guess ole' Leonard never heard Hideaway then. But Freddie was good enough to work at Cincinnati's King Records where this mega blues hit was recorded.Freddie stated that the song was based on an old Hound Dog Taylor song Taylor's Boogie.
STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN
RUDE MOOD
It wouldn't be an overstatement to claim that SRV was the greatest guitarist of all time. Complete control, never lost, always something fresh and new, He took the best of Mack,Hendrix and The 3 kings B.B. Albert and Freddie and melded it in to one Texas style Stew. If you have not had the pleasure of watching some of the live DVD out there, you will appreciate SRV to the fullest.

Rush
YYZ
This power trio could crank out some very tight complex music,YYZ is the IATA airport identification code for Toronto Pearson International Airport, of Rush's native area of Toronto. It is common practice for air navigation aids to broadcast their identifier code in Morse Code using VHF omnidirectional range (VOR). A plane using VOR equipment would then always know it's tracking the right station. The song's introduction, played in a time signature of 5/4, repeatedly renders the letters "Y-Y-Z" in Morse Code using various musical arrangements. FROM WIKIPEDIA, I personally did not know what YYZ stood for or the back story to it. Very interesting and Clever of the band.
