Some celebrities have been active on Twitter even before Twitter became popular. And there are some who may not be mainstream celebrities, but who have a wide following on Twitter because they are Internet superstars. Here are a few famous celebrities who are active on Twitter.
1. Ashton Kutcher
Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) is perhaps best known for his celebrity pranks on MTV, but his fame grew even more when he beat CNN to the one-million follower race in April of 2009. He offered to donate $100,000 to a malaria-oriented charity if he won, and he did. Perhaps Kutcher's rise to fame in the Twitter world was aided by his being a tech-savvy Internet user himself. Kutcher's account now has about 2.3 million followers, and is still among the top. His wife, Demi Moore, who tweets at http://twitter.com/mrskutcher is also among the top followed on Twitter.
2. Britney Spears
Britney Spears (@britneyspears) has always been the topic of controversy and is often in the limelight. Perhaps this is the reason her Twitter account is in the number two spot in terms of followers with 1.9 million. Whether it's about her dealings with the press, her fight with drugs, or her relationships, people love reading about Spears. And what's better than hearing it straight from the singer herself. Spears' account is mostly updated by her staff and online team, but the artist also occasionally tweets herself.
3. Oprah Winfrey
The queen of talk, Oprah Winfrey (@oprah) has fans all over the world. And what better way to follow her inspirational messages, book reviews, and interviews than with Twitter. Winfrey was said to have jumped on the Twitter bandwagon when celebrities started to join up, more particularly after the Ashton Kutcher win over CNN in the million follower race.
4. Ellen deGeneres
With over two million followers, Ellen deGeneres (@theellenshow) has become even more popular than fellow talk show host, Oprah. Aside from deGeneres' posting updates and videos of her show, she also gives free tickets to be part of the live audience through various online and offline contests.
5. John Mayer
Internet users love it when musicians share their lives and music with their fans online. John Mayer (@johncmayer) shares not only his music, but his wit and humor as well. Mayer also interacts well with his approximately 1.4 million readers, especially if the topics are about music, food and other areas of interest. Mayer describes himself as a "sandwich artist" and don't be surprised if you get pictures of "artistic" works involving sandwiches, fruits, and other food.
6. Barack Obama
Barack Obama (@barackobama), the 44th president of the United States (and the first African American to be so), is also an internet celebrity in his own right with about 1.5 million Twitter followers. Initially used as a campaigning tool in the Democrat primaries and subsequently the presidential elections, Obama's Twitter account now features updates on the President's day to day activities as the leader of the free world.
7. Lance Armstrong
Apart from movie actors and singers, a lot of athletes have begun to interact with fans all over the world through Twitter. Lance Armstrong (@lancearmstrong) is best known for his multiple-wins at the Tour de France, but perhaps even more for surviving cancer. Armstrong tweets about his travels all over the world, more often than not, the ones involving cycling.
8. Shaquille O'Neal
If you meet Shaquille O'Neal (@the_real_shaq) in person, the first thing you would probably see is his towering physique, and perhaps his equally towering attitude. Shaq's wit and playfulness is also evident in his Twitter feed, where he banters about with his followers on every topic imaginable.
9. Ryan Seacrest
People love reading about celebrities. But perhaps they love reading about what celebrities think about other celebrities even more. Ryan Seacrest's (@ryanseacrest) involvement in hosting TV and radio shows-especially entertainment oriented ones-makes him an authority on all things celebrity. His tweets include announcements and commentary on the popular American Idol and his radio programming. But perhaps the 1.4 million followers of Seacrest's account are most interested in what he has to say about other celebrities, and how he interacts with readers regarding this.
10. Perez Hilton
Perez Hilton (@perezhilton) gained internet fame (or infamy) from the celebrity-oriented website perezhilton.com, which is known for juicy gossip and strong commentary on celebrities. The site is perhaps also best known for its handwritten annotations on celebrity photos, which sometimes borders on the lascivious. Hilton's twitter account is just as popular with over a million followers. Note that as much as Hilton is an online celebrity in his own right, a lot of people have publicly expressed disdain for him because of his writing and reporting style.
