10 Must See Classic Halloween Movies For People Who Don't Like Scary Stuff

Really, these movies are pretty tame!

I am not a huge fan of the scary movie genre. I tend to shy away from excessive gore, violent ghost stories and haunted houses. Don't show me anything in 3D or with psychedelic weirdness or overly scary ghosts.

But I do like certain classic (somewhat) scary movies with attractive men, like Johnny Depp, Kevin Bacon and Jeff Goldblum.

I love watching a good movie on Halloween that have a little mystery, humor or are old enough that the scariness is now cheesy. Think 1970's, 80's or 90's...not 1940's or 50's, The Blob, The Thing and Dracula just won't do anything for me.

Bottom line. Don't take me to see Paranormal Activity or The Hills Have Eyes and I won't go near the Hellraiser or the Ring movies.

But here is a list of (fairly safe) movies for people (like me) who can't take gore or scary stuff.

Halloween is a great starter movie for people who hate horror movies. It's scary but not horrific. The gore is minimal and more theatrical then literal. Mike Myers is a scary guy but the movie has so much depth and psychological suspense that you won't get "run out of the movie theater scared", just maybe a bit "hair standing up on the back of your neck" scared. You might think about this movie at 3am but as long as you have friends with you it probably won't stop you from going out on Halloween night. Just don't watch Halloween H20, I've heard it's a lot more terrifying.

Sleepy Hollow

1999

Sleepy Hollow

Amazon Price: $2.91 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

I've got one word for you...Johnny Depp. Any movie with Johnny Depp is going to be awesome but Sleepy Hollow is particularly high on my list. I am also a huge fan of Tim Burton. Based on the Washington Irving classic about the legend of the headless horseman this movie is a bit gory but in a very Victorian way. It's got a few eye shuttering moments, but not many..think Johnny Depp and a story line that won't leave you disappointed in the end.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

1975

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (25th Anniversary Edition)

Amazon Price: $10.25 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

If you want to have fun on Halloween watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I love, love, love this movie. It's got great music, a fun cast and is a one of the best all time ever (non scary) horror movies. And if your a Meat Loaf fan like me you'll enjoy his performance as Eddie the delivery boy...What ever happened to Saturday night?

Tremors

1990

Tremors (Collector's Edition)

Amazon Price: $4.39 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

You're probably wondering why I put this movie on the list. I kind of see it as a Western Halloween movie. So many spooky movie take place in the east that it's refreshing to see some sun and sand. Tremors is kind of a bad movie (aside from Kevin Bacon) but it does have some good moments. The worm monsters are gross but not scary and there is a lot of humor amidst the tense (how do we kill this big worm) moments. It's also got the dad from Family Ties in it which I think is pretty cool.

Little Shop of Horrors

1986

Little Shop of Horrors (Snap Case Packaging)

Amazon Price: $9.78 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

Being in theatre I was always more familiar with the stage version of Little Shop of Horrors. However I really like the movie version too. Again not many scary parts in this movie unless you really have a fear of (big) house plants with teeth, OK that's a little bit scary. I do love this music in this movie and Steve Martin as the deranged dentist is just plain cool.

The Fly

1986

The Fly (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Amazon Price: $7.09 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

Jeff Goldblum rocks so that's why I picked this movie. It's also got a great plot even if it is a bit far fetched to think that man and fly can merge. This movie does get a bit gross towards the end when poor Jeff morphs into "The Fly" so if you're squeamish you might want to turn this movie off about half way through and read about what happens next.

Ghostbusters 1 & 2

1989

Ghostbusters Double Feature Gift Set (Ghostbusters / Ghostbusters 2 + Commemorative Book)

Amazon Price: $8.99 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

Who you gonna call? I had to say that. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd are probably three of the funniest people on earth. Throw in Rick Moranis and the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man and you've got two of the best Halloween night movies ever. Funny (a little) scary and just plain cool.

Gremlins

1984

Gremlins (Special Edition)

Amazon Price: $5.02 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

Gremlins is more of a Christmas movie but I say you can watch it for Halloween too. Any movie with thousands of little creatures (that have big teeth) counts as a Halloween movie in my book. It's a bit scary if you're afraid of small creature (with big teeth) but over all a PG-13 experience. Just don't watch the sequel, it doesn't work.

The Lost Boys

1987

The Lost Boys

Amazon Price: $1.47 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

Those Lost Boys could kick some Twilight vampire butt. Seriously, Kiefer Sutherland is a real vampire, not some Volvo driving sissy. This movie is scary and funny and one of the only movies that I enjoyed with the two Corey's. As a bonus you get Dianne Wiest as the cool mom.

House of Wax

2005

House of Wax (Full Screen Edition)

Amazon Price: $3.75 (as of 05/24/2012)Buy Now

Could any movie with Paris Hilton truly be that scary? House of Wax is definitely one of those goofy (don't go in the woods or empty building alone) kind of movies that draw you in until the bitter end. It's got some good effects and minor gore but is overall a fun group movie on Halloween.

I like the "Fly" ... because I'm a biology major/chemistry minor ... and I love science fiction themes (even if they are creepy). But I also like Gremlins ... because I like the San Francisco/New York "Chinatown" aspect of it (and I like fuzzy critter species ... ). Nice lens!

Nice group of not-too-scary movies, Bonnie.

I love ?Rocky Horror Picture Show' and ?Little Shop of Horrors' because they're entertaining and these are just the movie for the weak-stomached. I know I don't mind watching them at anytime and now that Halloween is around the corner, I'm looking for an array of movie titles to rent from Blockbuster. I use the Blockbuster Movie Pass with my DISH Network employee account and I have thousands of movie titles to choose from and the best asset is that it's cheaper than Netflix and Redbox! New and existing customers can also sign up with the offer and can get added channels in their DISH Network packages as an added bonus!
