But I blame your lens for making me change my mind :) This is such a fantastic lens. This made me wanna live longer for me to be able to visit this places :)

Portsmouth is worth a visit if you're into a bit of naval history.
  • cardiffcroupier Jan 15, 2012 @ 10:57 am | delete
Something I have found to do in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is a monthly "Ghost Walk" which includes parts of the active naval dockyard that is not normally open to the public. I talk about it on an Infobarrel article that I publish each month about what to do in the city.

I have also started to develop a lens about Portsmouth specifically.

  • jenniferteacher Oct 19, 2011 @ 6:09 am | delete
Whitby is such a nice little village, I'm glad it made the extended list. IMHO Hadrian's Wall should have been on the main list. It's got a lot more than one museum. I've written a lens about just five of the stops along the Wall, but there are a lot more that I didn't include.
  • Rankography Oct 16, 2011 @ 5:06 pm | delete

  • seeker2011 Sep 22, 2011 @ 6:38 pm | delete
Cycling along the country railway tracks in north England. Beautifull scenerey and some old buildings along the way to explore. Oh and a few fences and streams to overcome, but well worth the adventure. Slept in an old ruined castle alongside the train line, awesome.
  • TheGourmetCoffeeGuy Sep 21, 2011 @ 11:34 pm | delete
Lovely country, living history everywhere, great lens... look forward to going back to the UK and visiting more of these unique sites.

I like it. I've been living in the UK for a few months now. I've seen a handful of the places. nice lens.
  • goldenrulecomics Sep 11, 2011 @ 11:40 am | delete
I've been to a few places on your list, and I regret I didn't get to see the rest when I lived in London. One place I'd add to the list is Eltham Palace -- very historical, but with the added flair of being redecorated in Art Deco style in the early 20th century!
  • easpegren Sep 10, 2011 @ 8:42 am | delete
Great lens. Makes me want to see the UK. Thanks.
  • AsaGislason Sep 8, 2011 @ 4:33 am | delete
All good choices but miss the Minack Theatre is Cornwall's from the list, amazing experience to see a play there on a good day, or just wander around during the day.

The Avebury stone circles are also worth a visit, some enjoy it more than Stonehenge as you can get up close (and it is free).
  • woznii Sep 3, 2011 @ 1:18 pm | delete
Great list. Pleased to know i have visited many of the top 20. Like Tollyswood Derbyshires Peak District is woth the visit. Why not visit Pugins Gem in Cheadle while you are there?

Great list, I love them all and, yes, as someone hailing from the Derbyshire Peak District, I agree, a really wonderful [and often overlooked] place, somewhere for every mood too: light peak for your lighter, carefree, 'soft' moments and the dark peak when you want the brooding scenery to match your mood!
  • ellagis Aug 24, 2011 @ 6:41 pm | delete
I´d really love to visit UK better than what I´ve done until now. I visited some places in Scotland and London, of course, but nothing about the rest. Very inspiring lens!

  • Holidayhomerentals Aug 5, 2011 @ 10:48 am | delete
Some great places listed! Being from Cardiff I maybe a biased Welshman but the South Wales area including Cardiff offers some outstanding scenery.

As the capital city of Wales, Cardiff is rich with culture and heritage. With its iconic Roman/Normandy castle situated in the heart of the city centre there is no shortage of history in this city! Cardiff has in recent years fast become an international venue in hosting major exhibition and world events

Then there is picturesque Cardiff Bay, the home of the Welsh Assembly with it's a host of bustling bars & restaurants situated along the quayside of the bay. Further afield we are blessed to have the Brecon beacons, a collection of mountains beacons, waterfalls and fabulous nature walks!

    Thanks for the lens!
  • SudokuNut Aug 2, 2011 @ 4:53 pm | delete
Well I'm ashamed to say as a Brit, I've only been to two of those places. Stonehenge is next on my list of places to see though next time I return to Blighty.

When I was in London a few years ago I really fall it in love. I visited different museums and the Tate Gallery. Some of the touristy stuff was real fun. The tube is also fun :). I'd like to go back, not only to see the pictures and movies on my 4G phone!
  • travel-insurance-for Jul 20, 2011 @ 12:50 pm | delete

I studied abroad in Edinburgh while in college and still miss the city sometimes. The castle embedded in the dormant volcano is one of the most beautiful man-made structures I've ever seen.

I love the amount of history in the UK. Thanks for an awesome lens.

I've only been to the UK once, and we cannot wait to return! We didn't get to see any of the real touristy stuff - we had a little bungalow up in Lancaster, and rented a car. Saw some wonderful old castle ruins, went to a zoo, old mine, and Hadrian's Wall (I added that to the list of things to see in the UK!).

We just drove around and enjoyed the lovely countryside and people. Lunch in tearooms...takeaway...pub fare. It just couldn't get any better! Hopefully we'll get back for a longer visit and take in some of the sites of historical importance. We loved it!
  • Alfiesgirl Mar 13, 2011 @ 8:42 am | delete
I live in Londons Borough of Southwark which is just a mile from Tower Bridge and london Bridge so, I know lots about my town. However, I love Sussex as well as Kent, Southern England is so beautiful that I have never travelled further than the South Coast.

I've been to London a few times before finally going on one of those too-fast "it's Tuesday so we must be in London" tours and ended up once in a small town in Wales only because on that same tour the driver got lost (best part of the whole trip). It's been years now since I've been to the U.K. but this great lens reminds me of how much I love it. I hope to get back soon. Really nice lens. Also, thanks for your nice comments on my lens How I Improved My Life By Changing My Perspective.

Great guide, really inspiring - makes me think about where I'd like to go next! Although I love the Lake District, I'd put Snowdonia in the place of Lake Windermere, but that's just because I love mountains. More specifically, I'd recommend the view from the top of the Llanberis Pass.

Been to UK on numerous occasion and loved every visit. London is of course standard for all tourists but was lucky to visit some wonderful places - many of which are covered in your lens. Among my trips, the visit to Lake District (on a touring bus that takes you on an ancient steam engine) stands out. So does my trip to Salisbury and Bath.

    Hi,
what a great lens, shame you limited it to ten though. I'm lucky enough to have visited, through work and leisure, most places in the UK. Although I have never been to Ireland. I have not been to Chatsworth house, The Giants Causeway or The Eden Project. But my favorite place, apart from Scarborough where I live, is Edinburgh. If you can find a hotel, I would recommend a visit there during the festival.

Loved Great Britain: drove a car from Gatwick to Brighton, up through Wiltshire to Chester, and then over to Lake Bala, northern Wales, then down through southern Wales, the Cotswolds and Oxford back to Gatwick. Loved it!

Liverpool, if you are a football fan. Liverpool is not a city with modern architectual or lifestyle, no fanciful fashions, sensational attractions or delicious food. In Liverpool, especially on a matchday, you will realise that all its energy for the past 100 years has been invested in football....

Great idea for a lens. Most of my UK trips have been to Scotland so my favorites are all there.

Makes me a little homesick for the green countryside acroos the pond. Nicely put together and a wealth of useful resources and information. Consider adding a gallery of pictures from flickr early on just to show how beautiful these places are.

Well done. Very nicely put together. Was Surprised to see Westminister Abbey not on list, but with only 10...
