Why Celebrate the 100th Day of School?

The 100th Day of School is celebrated in elementary schools around the world. The date, of course, depends on when school started. It is mostly celebrated by young children who are learning to count to 100. Generally, the celebration starts on the 100th day and last for a week. During this time teachers promote activities using the number 100. Students have a fun time counting and sorting objects, food, and anything teacher's can think of. Students will learn to count from 1 to 100 - by ones, twos, fives, and tens in different fun ways. Teachers are always looking for new and interesting ideas for the 100 Days of School celebration.

Books about the 100th Day of School

Read to your students...

A fun way to promote your 100th Day of School celebration is to have plenty of books about the subject. Read to your students or have them read books aloud to class. Another idea is to have parents volunteer to read a book or two each day. I've included several books here as suggestions, and they are probably available in the school library as well.

From Library Journal: "Kindergarten-Grade 3-A clever way to teach children the many ways they can get to 100. Teachers will appreciate the questioning rhymes that illustrate how to count in groups of 1, 5, 10, or 20. "If 20 children each drop 5 papers on the floor, what do you get? 100 papers. And...(I would guess) an awful mess." The pictures feature a multiethnic classroom filled with smiling faces, lots of action, and vibrant color. Some of the illustrations allow children to actually count out the corresponding objects on the page, such as 100 toes or 100 legs on a centipede. The numbers 1 to 100 are printed on the endpapers in colorful blocks, with the objects from the rhymes interspersed throughout. A solid title to read aloud on the 100th day of school-or any other day.

Everyone will have a number book in which to write numerical discoveries and musings. Eager Emily dives right into the project. On the second day of school, Miss Cribbage teaches a song called "Tea for Two." On day three, Emily writes about her school bus, No. 3. In square dancing, Emily learns that there are four corners to a dancing square. She picks five different vegetables from her garden for her father to use in his tomato-zucchini-pepper-carrot-eggplant soup. From day one to day 100, Emily and her classmates expand their creative and mathematical skills as they immerse themselves in the exciting early days of school."

My wife was a school principal from the time our daughter was born until she entered third grade. What do you give the daughter of a principal as a gift? Why, a book of course! When she was in kindergarten they celebrated 100 days of school the students were supposed to bring in 100 of something. Some brought in 100 pennies. Some brought 100 paper clips. Our daughter brought in 100 of her books. When the teacher asked, "Are these books all yours?" our daughter misunderstood it to be, "Are these all the books you have?" She answered truthfully. "No, these are only about half of my books." The teacher was amazed! She couldn't imagine a kindergarten student with so many books! (She actually had closer to 250.)
