Lensroll: A Social Bookmarking Site Just for Squidoo Lenses!

It's a Digg for Squidoo pages

Most of the 100 social bookmarking sites above allow you to save all kinds of news, blogs, articles, and website pages. Many other bookmark services focus on a niche. Lensroll.com is one of those. Its niche is Squidoo lenses.

If you've got a lens you'd like to promote, simply register at the site and then submit your lens. You can submit up to two lenses a day, and users then vote in a Digg-like system to determine which ones appear on the front page.

Lensroll.com officially launched in December 2007, but as of January '08, it already has homepage PR3 and nearly 9,000 pages indexed in Google.

Social Bookmarking Submission Service

The list above can help you set up social bookmarking accounts at many different sites and create your own backlinks. But if you're strapped for time, simply don't like the tedium of signing up for so many accounts, or want to create more backlinks after you've already saved your bookmarks at these sites, you might want to consider hiring someone to do your social bookmarking.

I've used SubmitEdge with good results. Their social bookmarking services start at $35 for submission to 125 top sites. What's nice about this service is that they allow you to suggest three different titles and sets of keywords/tags. Many other services only allow one title and keyword set. They'll also send you a list of all the places to which they've submitted your site.

What is Google PageRank?

And why should you care when using social bookmarking sites?

PageRank (often abbreviated to PR) is Google's patented way of determining a web page's importance. The PageRank scale goes from 1 - 10, with 10 being highest, and it factors in the quality and quantity of links that point to the page.

Google describes it this way:

"PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B."

If you're using social bookmarking sites simply to recall your favorite pages, PageRank really isn't important. You should simply find a bookmarking site with features you like (Can you organize your bookmarks in folders? Can you highlight text on the site? Is it easy to save pages?).

But if you're a website owner, lensmaster or article writer using social bookmarking to help improve your site or article's searchability, PageRank is important. Google will likely find and index your site much more quickly if you add it to sites that already have PageRank rather than those that don't.

However, new sites are always springing up. A bookmarking service that has no PageRank or indexed links today may be doing very well three months from now. Also, remember that Yahoo!, MSN and other search engines have their own algorithms, so even though a site has only 10,000 links in Google, it may have 100,000 in Yahoo! or vice versa.

Another Free Link for Your Site

I learned of Qassia from BigJim's Add Your Profile lens (which is a great place to start your social networking).

It's a community rev-sharing site and directory that allows users to add articles or "intel," but it also aims to help webmasters promote their sites by giving you one quality backlink (not a "no-follow" link) for every piece of "intel" you add. It's still in beta, but looks promising.

Lisadh, there's a problem with pursuing pagerank through social networking sites. The vast majority of them set links NoFollow, so the pagerank isn't passed on at all.

Or, while their front page may have lots of pagerank, member profiles on their site may not.

Putting links on social networking sites attracts traffic socially, by getting followers and making connections. But few of them pass much SEO benefit. See Real Advice from Bad SEOs from someone who's spent ten years studying this stuff.

On the other hand, Tagfoot, lensroll.com and some Squidoo-related directories are follow. So they can help.

Every little bit of self-promotion has the possibility of attracting some traffic (or getting banned), but I'm not convinced these sites' pagerank is gonna rub off on us. :)

Greekgeek, you are right about sites that add the nofollow tag, and more and mores sites are doing that these days. I think MOST big bookmarking sites are now nofollow.

The point of this lens was originally to list sites that were indexed and noticed by Google so people wouldn't waste their time on bookmarking sites that weren't even IN Google. But there are obvious limitations to the list, including the fact that it doesn't include whether a site is dofollow or nofollow.

Also, as I noted in the intro, the PageRank given here was only for the homepage, and that doesn't tell you whether the page your link will actually appear on will have Google PR. That's a whole other issue.

A lot has changed in the nearly two years since this list was originally created. I still think there's some value in knowing which sites Google seems to like (as rated either by PageRank or number of indexed pages), but you still need to look at other factors, too.
