100 Years of Boy Scouts

Ranked #1,005 in Culture & Society, #24,331 overall

2010 is the 100 year anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America were incorporated on February 8, 1910 under the laws of the District of Columbia. The founders of the Boy Scout of America organization included William D. Boyce, Colin H. Livingstone, Daniel Carter Beard, Ernest Thompson Seton, James E. West, and honorary members former Presidents William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt.

The scouting movement was originated by Robert Baden-Powell of the British Army, when in 1907, he held the first encampment on Brownsea Island in England.

During the 100 year anniversary, the Boy Scouts will be planning many events and activities celebrating their 100 year anniversary. If you get the chance, stop by and help them celebrate.

I went to summer camp (Many Points Scout Camp in northern MN) with my 12 year old grandson. First time I have been to summer since I was a boy myself in 1965. I am an Eagle scout worked with scouts after high school till I went in the Army. When I got out, I started back in scouts til about 1990. When I got out since I had 2 daughters and no sons. Now I find myself back with scouts since Dec 2010 with my grandson, his dad is also an Eagle Scout but is in the Army stationed in Korea. I find their is a lot of changes since I got out. But I still knew the oath and laws even after all this time. I have been to Fall camp, Spring camp & Summer camp as well as several day camps and helped with an Eagle scout project with my grandson. My grandson will be moving to TX in April when his dad gets back from Korea. I will miss working with him on his advancements. He has almost completed requirment for second class. .

My favorite memory of being a scout was summer camp. It was just so much fun.

As a leader, my favorite memory was camping with my troop. The girls decided to show me how much they appreciated me with a group hug. I will never forget how good that made me feel!

So many memories that it's hard to choose but a few highlights as a leader: The 2001 National Jamboree (can't wait to head down to "The Hill" in VA this summer too!); my son's Arrow of Light Ceremony and his Eagle Scout Court of Honor. The camp-outs, the many trips, the lifelong friends and just being able to help boys grow into fine young men with character and moral values have all been so rewarding as a mom and a Scout Leader with the BSA! Happy 100th Birthday ! I LOVE this 5 Star Lens !!!!
