100 Years of Girl Scouts

2012 Is the 100th Anniversiary of Girl Scouting

On March 12, 1912 Juliette (Daisy) Gordon Low called her cousin and said "I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight!" She assembled 18 girls from Savannah, Georgia, for the first Girl Scout Meeting.

2012 Marks the 100th year of Girl Scouting. It is amazing that an organization formed so long ago still does today what it did 100 years ago - that is to provide girls with experiences that they might not have otherwise. It is an accepting environment that helps girls gain self esteem and develop leadership and other important life skills. It's no coincidence that many women in leadership positions in business, government and other areas have a girl scout background.

What memories do you have of Girl Scouting?

Share your experience with girl scouting here.

I have many fond memories ... camping with my troop, the big council events, learning to build a fire (in the rain!), going to NYC to see the Rockettes, teaching younger girls, selling cookies, making crafts, going on trips, horseback riding, becoming a member of the LIFE group, and so much more.

I wasn't a Girl Scout, but my daughters went to Girl Scout camp every summer and they just loved it.

I too have many fond memories of camp.

I made what has to be THE WORST stew on a campout... the leaders said we had to cook for ourselves, and we made a watery mess. I've since improved!

I didn't get a chance to join girl scouting when I was in school. But I know this is a very healthy activity for children. Good job here! Thanks for sharing!

I have never been a Girl Scout, but I certainly admire the movement. Thanks for this great and informative lens.

I loved learning how to tie knots and how to apply first aid. They were my best memories. They are skills that are really practical and very useful :))

I participated for a few years when I was a child but I moved a lot and so I didn't stick with it.

As an adult I have volunteered for the Girl Scouts at the regional head quarters so to speak ... like volunteering to help with a first aid/CPR training for troupe leaders around the region.
