All to benefit Parkinson's disease research and to inspire all the every day heroes out there to strive to make a difference.
Follow the journey here. I will update you on the progress, media coverage, and how much we raise.
Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease each year.
The Challenge
James Mangini, pictured here with his father, is 32 years old. He is a business owner living outside of Charleston, SC. Six years ago his father was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.Understanding the challenges that his father and the millions of others with Parkinson's disease face everyday, James decided to find a way to challenge himself. His goal was not only to raise money to help find a cure for Parkinson's, but to inspire every day heroes everywhere to help make a difference in the world.
The idea for the 1000 Mile Marathon was born.
On May 7, 2012 James will begin his journey in Charleston, SC. He plans to run approximately 8 - 10 hours a day and reach the finish line on June 7th. The destination? His father's house in Hillsborough, NJ.
James will stop in about a dozen towns along the way to help raise awareness and money to benefit the Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Research Foundation.

James Shares His Experience
"The onset of the disease is frightening. At first my father was fine, other than a slight tremor in his pinky finger. As years went by more symptoms began to appear - difficulty going from sitting to standing and slow movement. I went home this Christmas and had not seen my father in six months. He now has facial twitches and other random movements. His arms and hands move of their own accord, and it appeared his upper and lower body was doing different things, oddly disconnected. He also had difficulty finishing sentences. I broke down." "As far back as I can remember, my father always made it a point to show people he cared, and often helped others in need."
- James Mangini

About Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's is a degenerative neurological disease that is estimated to affect one out of every 100 people over the age of 60. Unfortunately, the rate of misdiagnosis is very high because there is no definitive test for the disorder. Research indicates that there are about 1 million people living with Parkinson's disease in the U.S. alone.
Symptoms of the disease can vary. We most commonly associate Parkinson's with the motor symptoms like tremors, slow movement, balance problems, and stiff limbs. There are also many "non motor" symptoms that patients can develop like dementia, depression or anxiety, difficulty sleeping, loss of sense of smell, speech and swallowing problems and drooling.
It's plain to see how Parkinson's often has a significant impact on those who suffer with the disease as well as their caregivers.
While disease progression can be slowed with medication, there is no cure for Parkinson's disease. The Michael J. Fox Foundation is the world's largest private funder of Parkinson's research. They aggressively fund, highly targeted research programs and actively engage with global scientists, patients, business leaders, donors and volunteers. The Foundation has funded more than $275 million in research to date.

- Thank you for raising awareness even further. This disease killed my grandmother nearly 40 years ago and people are still suffering.
