Compare LED Grow Lights to HPSWhere can I buy 1000 Watt LED Grow Lights?
Many people are curious lately to find out about 1000 Watt LED Grow lights. For example . . . do they exist, where can I buy them, are they needed in my hydroponic grow system?

The result that I have found is that indoor growers are uncertain about the effectiveness of LED grow lights and how to compare them watt-for-watt versus HPS and MH grow lights? The following is intended to clear up some common questions about LED grow lights to help you decide if they are a good match for you and your indoor growing.

The most important thing to realize is that you should not compare LED Grow Lights to HPS or MH on a watt-per-watt basis. As an example, a 1000 Watt HPS grow light will grossly under-perform when put up against a 1000 watt LED grow light. The LED light would destroy the competition every time. To keep a level playing field, you need to compare the 1000 Watt HPS to a 350 Watt LED grow light and this is the reason why. You would probably agree that it comes down to the yield that a light/plant combination will produce. In this example, a relatively low-powered LED grow light will produce as much or higher yield than its HPS or MH counter-part.

Why You Probably Don't Need 1000 Watt LED grow lights

The reason is found in how efficiently light waves are produced by each kind of light. An HPS grow light emits white light which is a full spectrum, though there is a tilt towards the yellow/orange wavelengths. Also, it produces an enormous level of heat. The end result is an efficiency rating around 15%. This means that 85% of the light produced is wasted as it is not usable during photosynthesis and is lost as heat radiation.

In a stark contrast to the above, the best LED grow lights will send out light at specific red, blue, and orange wavelengths. Almost all light produced is that which can be used directly in photosynthesis to support plant growth. On top of that there is only a small amount of heat produced by LED grow lights allowing the overall efficiency to exceed 90%. This translates into a 350 watt LED grow light that can match or out-perform a yeild of a 1000 Watt HPS - while eliminating the need for ballasts, heat removal duct work, fans, and constant bulb replacement, all while saving you money on electricity.
