Dating Advice - Questions For Breaking the Ice
By Dana Rhinehart
The first date can be nerve-wracking. Some people have a gift for gab no matter what, but others choke up and can't speak with the same easy confidence they have when they're around friends and family. One way to keep the first date from going sour is to have a list of questions for breaking the ice.
Here are some fun questions to get to know someone:
What do you do for fun?
You can learn a lot about someone based on what they do in their spare time. If your date has trouble answering this question, you may be dealing with a workaholic or someone who has no life to speak of. But if you both share similar interests, you've got something to talk about already. However, if your interests and hobbies are radically different, you may not be compatible; someone who stays home on the weekend to read books or play computer games may not be a good match for you if you like partying or exercising on the weekends.
What are the best things on the menu?
One of the more convenient "break the ice" questions, assuming your date has been to this restaurant before. It could lead to a fun conversation about food in general. You can also ask for some tasty recommendations if you're not too familiar with the restaurant.
Did you hear about _______ on the news?
Whether you're mentioning a natural disaster, a political campaign, or a murder trial, it can lead to insight on your date's world view. (Their answer will also tell you whether or not they keep up with the news.) As first date questions go, it's much more neutral than asking a loaded question about what their political views are or what their stance is on the death penalty.
How did your day go?
Let's face it: Once a person gets comfortable around you, they're going to tell you about their day on a regular basis. Asking this now will give you a taste of what you'll have to put up with later! You'll also get a feel for what their lifestyle is like.
Do you have any pets?
People love talking about their pets, so this one of the best questions to ask on a first date. Then you get to swap funny pet stories, which can keep things lively. But if your date doesn't have a pet, that doesn't mean the conversation is dead. You can ask "Why not?" and see where that leads.
What do you do for a living?
This is one of the most basic "break the ice" questions. It's so basic that perfect strangers feel comfortable asking it. Although it might lack some of the charm or originality of other questions, it's not likely to offend anyone. Besides, your date might have an fascinating occupation!
What's your favorite _______?
You fill in the blank here. You can ask about favorite books, movies, music, TV shows, computer games, vacation spots, or anything like that. This helps you discover whether you share any common interests or passions.
There are lots of fun questions to get to know someone; you could easily come up with more. Speaking of fun, you've probably noticed that there aren't any heavy-duty questions like whether or not your date wants to have kids someday. Those types of questions aren't appropriate for a first date. Asking first date questions is mostly about having fun and getting a feel for someone. You want to learn just enough to decide whether you want to go on a second date.
Don't interrogate your date or make the mistake of trying to script everything in advance: It's best to just have a general idea of questions you'd like to ask instead. This helps the conversation flow more naturally.
Good luck on your first date!
