From the lens The 100 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Thanks for giving me such wonderful feedback on this list. I have been asked if I plan to update this list, and for right now the answer is no. I am actually in the middle of unveiling my 100 favorite albums on my personal website, ericmackattacks.com, so check that out if you want to keep up with my work. I have written in-depth commentary for each album and have embedded YouTube clips of several songs per album so you can listen as you read. It's by far my favorite list that I've done. Be sure to stop by and say hello.

Journey- Dont stop believing? Its the only one of these songs you would hear every night at a pub or bar and the number one karaoke song. If everyone wants to sing it wouldnt you call it influential?

You are musically illiterate if you pan this list, and you're overtly optimistic if you believe it's perfect. You can't possibly create a universal list that covers the greatest songs of all time. These types of things are 'for fun' or 'informational'; I have no problems with this list, because it is based on personal opinion. My opinion differs as does every other person who reads this post. So, be realistic when it comes to this kind of list. You will never be satisfied with one until you make your own, so please, be my guest to back up your criticism with work. As far as this specific list is concerned, it hits many high points in music, but obviously, many are going to be left out as well. I love many of the songs on the list, however, and I am always happy to see people promoting music from decades past. In my opinion, I have a very difficult time deciding on what my favorite songs are or even, what the greatest songs are (which are different questions, entirely). How can you possibly decide on the greatest songs by artists like: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Elvis Presley, etc.. There are simply too many great songs by these types of artists to decide on any sort of "best song" standard. The only song I will list, from my personal opinion, that is missing is "American Pie" by Don Mclean. I just love that song from start to finish... Other than that, there are a lot of great songs here. Good work. Maybe, I'll make my own list someday. . .

Hi Eric enjoyed your list..........attempted to list them all on a Ipod playlist from my own collection........Managed to have 78 of the 100........realised the gaps missing in my own collection mainly 50-60s stuff....shortly to be filled you can forget what great iconic music came from Rock and Roll !!!!
I could add a few to your 100 but on a whole it makes good listening
    Cheers paul

Awesome list, nevertheless where they are, they are great songs that we should never lose. There were a few I didn't know, but overall, it is a great list. I am glad you made it. Although, I think the song" Used to Love you" by John Legend and "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele should be added.

Bohemian Rhapsody is better lyrically and Musically than any song on this list.

this is really a great thing to know "I grew tired of classic rock, since classic rock really is just '70s era rock music, with some exceptions from the '60s and '80s. While the term "rock and roll" includes rock music from the mid-'50s to the end of the '80s, classic rock is actually much more specific, focusing almost entirely on guitar-driven rock music from 1970s."...more power

This is probably one of the best music lists i've seen in a while! I'd probably move around a few songs and i second STGrichDT's comment, but very cool!! A few of my favorites i was sad not to see: I'm on Fire (Springsteen), Simple Man (Skynyrd), Neil Young, Boston, Kansas, Thorogood.

I can really appreciate the time you must have spent putting this lens together. That said, I really think you should bump up Prince's Purple Rain song to at LEAST the top 20. Also, I didn't see Lenni Williams' song Because I love you.. which happens to be the best love song of all time. I'm telling you.. you should google it. Long song, and he crys through most of it.. and it is amazing.

Great lens! I enjoyed it :)

Interesting list. You gave yourself a hard task with this idea, and any individual's list would always provoke debate as it is subjective and we all have our own opinions. Although personally I would HAVE to say American Pie and Sweet Child o' Mine, amongst others, would have to be in any top 100. Good try though

While some of these songs belong in there place, the vast majority are ill placed or undeserving. All together this list is a disgarce to the internet and all people who use it...... And you're a sell out to to the coorporate machine (itunes) and thats not very rock and roll.

Imagine number one! The irony in that is I couldn't put a list like that together... but John Lennon imagine is on the top of my list "classic rock" this will be lensrolled to that lens just as soon as its featured :)

The top 100 even though it has some great music listed. So many great songs are missing. Everyone has their own top 100. But you can't exclude certain songs with looking at the artist listed here. Without the influence of some of the legendary blues, jazz, gospel and any other genre of music that gave the future artists to start writing or singing, join their first band. But then again this is your top 100, thank you for sharing and reminding me off some songs I haven't heard in a very long time.
Imagine is a good song. Maybe not number 1, but in the top 10, perhaps.
  • Rollin_J Apr 14, 2011 @ 12:26 am | delete
i think everyone give Imagine too much credit. yes it's a great song and top 5 for sure, but i just don't think it deserves the number 1 spot. good list overall though
  • kcbacon Apr 13, 2011 @ 12:36 pm | delete
Wow, there have been some phenomenal songs written. This is a great list. There are a few songs on here that while iconic, I would never consider as one of the top 100 greatest songs of all time. In my opinion for a song to be one of the greatest of all time, it has to be timeless, meaning relevant and still listened to today. There are many songs on this list that don't meet this criteria. Regardless, it is a great list.
  • JanezKranjski Apr 13, 2011 @ 5:40 am | delete
There is nothing I would add to this list. Great list.
  • pheonix76 Apr 9, 2011 @ 9:46 pm | delete
Nice lens --- so much great music!!! Many of my favorites made your list, and I totally agree with your #1, "Imagine" gives me chills every time I hear it. I like that you included The Swell Season too!!! :)
  • xxleafsfanxx Apr 3, 2011 @ 4:55 pm | delete
Bohemian Rhapsody should be #1, not #34
  • Vintervarg Apr 4, 2011 @ 10:27 am | delete
I would place "Stairway to Heaven" as N1 :-)
At least it is N1 in the list of best rock music songs of all times.
  • fefe Apr 2, 2011 @ 11:45 am | delete
I never thought about listening to the blues but your comments have me interested. I listen to music of different genres and just like good music. Much of the music that's popular today is terrible.
Also, it's great that the Beatles are now on iTunes! :)

When I saw the title of your lens, it intrigued me. After seeing # 100 I immediately pressed 'end' to find out which songs was 1 & 2. The page took a while to load & I impatiently tried to imagine (lol) what song would be considered 'the greatest'. I negatively thought it would be something new & what I would deem as crap. But, I was wrong. I still get misty hearing Imagine & Stairway is my personal #1. I can't comment on the rest of the list, since I jumped to the end (or the beginning). Just wanted to say thanks, for starting off my day with a smile.

This is a nice list of songs, but this is definitely not a top 100 best songs ever, if it were it would SUCK, no ofense, it is just my opinion...
  • fefe Apr 2, 2011 @ 11:53 am | delete
I think everyone would have their own unique list of the best 100 songs, and not agree with other lists.

Great 100 list. I've been searching for 'new' old songs to download and you gave me some great ideas. How did I ever forget about Lennon's Imagine, LOL. I've been searching around and found some good top 100 songs in 2011, but it's nice to have some oldies in my playlist.

I am only 28 yers old, so I´m not familiar with the 50´s songs, but all in all I think you did a gret job putting up this list, and I am happy to see there are still people out there who remember the great ones, the roots of modern music, the forefathers...Thank you
  • Eric_Mack Mar 21, 2011 @ 10:37 am | delete
Nah, no worries. Regarding the classic rock debate, the term "classic rock" is used only to describe a radio format, and classic rock stations never play anything from the '50s. People have a tendency to use "classic rock" and "rock and roll" interchangeably, which I consider to be incorrect.
  • joycetmann Mar 21, 2011 @ 10:07 am | delete
P.S. I was afraid that I may have come across as smug or something in my earlier comment. I just want to say that it is fascinating to see how two people from two different generations can view a musical genre from separate vantage points. Again, a great lens. Keep it up, Keep it up, Eric.
  • joycetmann Mar 20, 2011 @ 2:12 pm | delete
A fascinating list. A few thoughts for pondering: I am almost 60 years old and as a five-year-old I recall seeing Little Richard perform live. (My brother was a teenager in the mid-'50s) My definition of class rock varies from yours. Its height was from the mid to late 60s. With some exceptions, not much of importance was happening in the '70s -- with the obvious exceptions of your first two selections and some others such as Dire Straights. Frankly, I would have put Stairway to Heaven as number one. And somewhere on this list I'd have put Duran Duran's Rio. A wonderful lens. Loved your inclusion of Eric Clapton's quote re: the blues.

I like your list overall, but you need to have more 80's music (I see no New Wave songs). Also, I would say that you need less Cream and more MJ. Lastly, I would add Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by Green Day. Still, I love your list. I am current;y working on my own list. I would love your opinion when I am done.

Let me first say GREAT LIST... now let me next say where is "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Crossroads"??? and this kind of list just doesnt seem complete with out Steve Winwood. It makes me wonder if you were feelin alright when you made it. And in my humble opinion i would have put "THE WEIGHT" in the top ten and removed a few Beatles songs. Not that the Beatles arnt great but this list is a little to beatles friendly.

What are the MBT and Who need them,You've noticed them in commercials
and on devoted walkers in the park. These are the shoes that have the rounded
sole that makes them look somewhat like rocking horses. They are named MBTs,
which is short for for Masai Barefoot Technology, though that appears somewhat
odd when you consider that MBT walking shoes are at present the favorite
of suburban housewives from Philadelphia to Portland. The primary implied benefit
of MBT shoes is their capacity to pressure your body to use muscle groups
which often aren't involved in walking, especially if you are accustomed to
strolling on pavement or running tracks. There is anecdotal evidence about
    cheap MBT shoes
relieving continual lumbar pain, though you won't see that
in the commercials. The convex sole of the shoes is meant to duplicate strolling
on sand, which is the daily walking conditions of the Masai people of Kenya.

The principal thing to remember is that MBT UK are meant for fitness
walking. When you solely employ them as you are working around the house, you
could notice some minor improvement in muscle tone and posture, yet not so much
as to drop a clothing size. Employing these shoes for lengthy periods of
walking, especially speed walking, will enable them to re-sculpt your calves,
thighs and backside, and strengthen your stabilizing muscles.

ok smells like teen spirit should be in the top 10.... 9 or 10. Pearl Jam shouldnt even be on the list like look who is on the list the beatles, john lennon, the eagles, led, and so on and so forth these are bands that were great and were the best in there decade so pearl jam should not be there. Stairway to heaven should be number 1. Thats it other than that im good.

Imagine? Really? Don't get me wrong, it's a good song, but doesn't deserve to be in top ten, let alone #1?!!? This list is almost perfect except for that one song. It's not really as great as what it may seem. I saw stairway at #2 and was hoping for something that was at least worth being in the top ten to hold #1's spot. Like I said this list is pretty much perfect... except that one song...

I love rock music and I like your list, but I have to say that this is so English-American. Where is Edith Piaf for instance "La vie en rose"?, I would agree with the madrigals comment, and include perhaps Thomas Morley. Anybody knows him? my favorite madrigal is John Bennet's "Weep, o mine eyes". Or Janequin's "le chant des oyseaux". Maybe as a recognition of the existence of classical music you could include "Ode to Joy" from Bethoven's ninth symphony. What about a latin american Bolero? My choice "Regalame esta noche" from Roberto Cantoral. Anyone knows who Joan Manuel Serrat is? You would have to include "Mediterraneo" from him...I hope you get curious and listen to some of these suggestions. There are so many more...

good list but obviously very personal. Most lists of this type are voted for by hundreds if not thousands of readers or listeners. I envy you the ability to differentiate between #35 and #36 for example. I would never be able to do that. I have lensrolled this to a new lens I have created, all the #1 british hits of 1969. I hope to do a series including, to start with, the years 1960 to 1971. You migt be able to guess my approximate age, LOL

This is a fine and fairly eclectic 100 greatest songs of all time....even to the papas got a brand new pigbag song AND including Paranoid by Sabbath at No.69 too.
Impossible of course to include everything....but Queen, Joy Division/New Order, B-52s and The Smiths ALL wrote some fabulous and memorable singles...but you have been particularly thin on them....especially Queen who had around 20 top 20 singles in their repertoire....perhaps there is more of the above in the top 200?
Excellent taste in music though, squidoo...Nice one.
  • stevecrenshaw Nov 10, 2010 @ 9:02 pm | delete
We will have to agree to disagree. Of course taste and age have a lot to do with it. Great list an lens.

ace list man enjoyed going through it! I was worried when I had gone through 90 songs and hadn't seen Hotel California yet! Haha

I felt this was a little Michael Jackson dry, Smooth Criminal maybe?

But the one I think you really missed is JOURNEY! Any of their greats, but of course the default answer with Journey would be Don't Stop Believing. Lights and Faithfully would have worked.

Others to think about; Def Leppard, AC/DC, Scorpions, Guns and Roses, Steve Miller Band, Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville

    Sorry finally;

Where's Ben E. King Stand By Me!!

haha really though enjoyed the list

Man you really nailed this list, awesome job! You included a few songs that I might not have thought of, but which fit perfectly. There were only a few songs that I didn't recognize on the list.
I can't wait to read your others.
  • davey_jones16 Oct 23, 2010 @ 3:30 pm | delete
Hey, good list there, although, slightly confused at the lack of a Bon Jovi song.. you might not be a huge fan, but in my opinion they should have atleast 1 song in there somewhere. Other than that the rest are all good choices, well done

Hey guys, appreciate all the comments. Keep them coming!

    Regarding some recent comments:

    1. This isn't just a list of classic rock songs. Read the intro at the top for more info.

    2. pboimare: "The Message" (#63) is a hip hop song. The reason why it's the only one on the list is because I didn't feel that the other great hip hop songs have made as great of an impact and, frankly, aren't good enough.
  • jprice Oct 22, 2010 @ 11:11 pm | delete
Quite the collection you have here! Well done...
  • 23squidoo Oct 22, 2010 @ 2:17 pm | delete
Awesome lens/list. I've got to agree with previous posters, though, not necessarily the best *songs* of all times, but the best of classic rock. Great job!
  • Jeff_McRitchie Oct 22, 2010 @ 10:32 am | delete
This is a pretty good list. But shouldn't the 100 greatest songs of all time include songs from every genre? Otherwise it's really just 100 greatest classic rock songs. But, I still think it's an excellent compilation of songs. Now to go make a playlist...
  • pboimare Oct 22, 2010 @ 10:12 am | delete
I have to agree with a lot of that list being at least pretty close. I can't help but notice that there is no hip-hop or rap included on there though. All in all, pretty good though.
  • charder Oct 21, 2010 @ 3:17 pm | delete

  • QuestForHozro Oct 20, 2010 @ 9:19 pm | delete
    Great List!
I'd have gotten Hendrix "And The Wind Blows Mary" in there, and found room for Neil Young's "Helpless" as well. I can understand the choice of "Baba O'Reilly" but would probably choose "Won't Get Fooled Again" if I had to pick just one track by The Who from Who's Next.

When you picked an Orbison song, did you consider "Running Scared"?

Overall I have to give you a lot of credit for a great list!

It's tough since music is a matter of taste. A top 100 for one person would be totally different for another, but there is no doubt lots of thought went into this list! It'd probably be easier to choose with narrower criteria like "top 100 pop songs from the 60s through 80s". My top song would probably be by nat king cole or ella fitzgerald. I love their voices and the arrangements. : )

Good list! Some songs on there I disagree with, however I only have one question. Why are there no songs from the 21st century? While, yes, the majority of today's music is not good, there are some songs that really deserve to be on here. Just in my own humble opinion.

Love the comments, guys. Keep them coming. Also, give some of the songs you think should be represented on the list a shout out. I appreciate all of the feedback.

amyjoy24: I honestly hadn't thought about the male/female thing. I wasn't intentionally being sexist or anything like that. I'm not biased towards male singers, I just think that, as it happens, the greatest songs happen to have been sung mostly by men. (Bands tend to consist of men, for starters.) There are many, many great songs and artists that I had to leave off the list. I'm still (slowly) working towards expanding the list to 200, which would let me both deepen and broaden the palette of choices available.

jspec42: Johnny Cash's version of "One" is a cover. U2 did the original.
  • BarbaraBushless Sep 6, 2010 @ 9:53 am | delete
Long live rabid feminism! :) Just kidding. I agree - although never looked at it that way - perhaps a decent spread would be in order - Lens master knows though! ;)
  • amyjoy24 Sep 6, 2010 @ 9:11 am | delete
Pretty long list of men... Where are the women? Carole King? Ella Fitzgerald? Etta James? Joni Mitchell? Barbara Streisand? Sarah Vaughn? There is only one female alone, and only one women's group. The other five (yes only 7 in a 100, 2 of which are the SAME band) are singers in a male band. You need to expand your mind, not to be inclusive of women but to be comprhensive of all great music.
  • BarbaraBushless Sep 1, 2010 @ 3:26 am | delete
Too many options! Way too many - amazes me how despite all those great songs having been made there are still more around the corner - it is like the human mind is capable of near infinite creativity.

I have to admit, Yesterday does show a lot more depth than songs like I Want To Hold Your Hand, so we are agreed in that aspect.
But I suppose the last list was very heavily focused on rock, so this list is a bit of a change. Guess I'm more of a classic rock enthusiast myself :P
And I would look forward to an updated 200 songs list!
Just 1 small request: Please try to include at least 1 more Queen song on the new list? (I am a massive Queen fan). I think there should be 1 more in the top 200, but that's my opinion
Also, maybe more Elton John? And perhaps 'We Are The World'?
  • Eric_Mack Aug 23, 2010 @ 2:26 am | delete
    Hey guys, thanks for commenting.

letje - Very true, this is subjective. Though it's interesting to me that the same handful of songs tend to show up near the top of most people's lists.

Adam - The previous list was a little heavier on classic rock, so if that's what you're into, then yeah, seeing Free Bird and Bohemian Rhapsody in the 30s must be somewhat disappointing since they're two of the best classic rock songs. I guess we have a good faith disagreement about Yesterday. It's kind of a quiet song (if that makes any sense), but I think it was really the first time the Beatles showed any real depth in their songwriting before their writing blossomed on Rubber Soul. FYI, I Want to Hold Your Hand was the last song left off the list, so if this list ever gets expanded to 200 (which it hopefully will), that's going to likely be #101. Stay tuned!
  • Adam Lawton Aug 22, 2010 @ 11:20 pm | delete
I honestly think that the previous version of your list was better. I am not very happy with songs like Free Bird and Bohemian Rhapsody being so low on the list, while a simple pop tune like 'Yesterday' is at #14.
However, it all depends on personal taste, I suppose, and your personal taste is incredibly spread out over several genres of music. A very nice list, certainly better than most.
  • letje Aug 22, 2010 @ 5:21 pm | delete
Nice one. Still, I think to name the best songs is rather subjective though I certainly agree with a lot of the "nominees". keep it up!
