What is Success?

It is not all financial

Success is when you feel at ease with yourself, when you earn enough to sleep well at nights, when your close relationships are good and you are a positive influence on those around you. When you can deal with adversity and plan for the future. For me success is also achieving self-control, defeating procrastination and feeling motivated and passionate about my life and work

The Half-Job Tip

A major stumbling block for most people is they the keep putting off unpleasant projects. We'll keep coming back to this over the hundred days, but this is a great tip.

Get a project STARTED by saying to yourself say "I will assemble the paperwork into a folder" and then STOP. Or say "I will assemble the tools required" and then STOP.

I thought this tip dumb when I first heard it, but the trick is that when we ordinarily think about starting a project our imagination runs away with itself we see all the problems and suddenly it seems impossible, we put it off.
The HALF-JOB Tip gets you started!

Bridging Tip : How to keep a conversation going

Bridging Tip : How to keep a conversation goingYou know the situation you are unexpectedly introduced to someone potentially important to you, you exchange a few politenesses, then there is an embarrassed pause and one of you moves on; the moment is lost. Bridging is a valuable technique used by salesmen to keep conversations going. Here are the main bridges:-

Meaning...?
For Example...?
So then...?
Therefore...?
Then You...?
Which means...?

How it works :-
You start be asking them say what their job is, they answer, you ask them whether they like their job, they answer briefly or uninterestedly you then need a bridging response eg "Which means...?". Keep using bridging responses until you hit one of their buttons, they will then talk enthusiastically, you will then know enough about to ask interesting questions.

Try this on a friend or colleague first until you get the knack of it, also remember the Tip "Be interested not interesting!!

The Four Quadrants

Steven Covey describes a high-level prioritization scheme in his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. In this scheme, tasks are categorized by four quadrants:

Q1 - Important and Urgent
Q2 - Important but Not Urgent
Q3 - Not Important but Urgent
Q4 - Not Important and Not Urgent

Explanation:-
You will only be successful if you spend a lot of your time and effort in Category Q2. Surprising? Think about it!!
Quadrants Q1 and Q3 have to be done and so take care of themselves. Q4 is don't care anyway, but people waste lots of time on Q4 because they are painless tasks. But in Q2 "Important not urgent" you have things like set up your pension, start a savings plan, starting updating your CV, write a business plan, study for next year's exams, write your book, these are all planning for your future items!

Use your Pain or Failure as a Motivator

Use your Pain or Failure as a MotivatorLots of people only succeed when something bad happens to them, they were sacked or had a bad illness. In my case I dropped out of college I had to repeat my studies at my own expense, but I found when started my career I was burning with desire to catch up and exceed.

What pain or rejection have you suffered? What pain can you use to fuel your success? Remember how much more difficult it is for the "comfortable" to leave their rut.

Get Your Life Back on Track

Hey you are not alone!

Lots of people go thru this stage, only a lucky few have continuous success throughout their life, the trick is to do and want to something about it. It's encouraging that you've recognised the problem and are researching solutions.

Of course it doesn't take 5 minutes to get your life back on track and you risk going through some bad times as you leave your comfort zone and even times when you appear to be going backwards. The rewards for success and for your self esteem are immense however so why not start that journey today!

NLP : Reframing

A technique to view things you cannot change in a a positive light

In Neuro Linguistic Programming reframing is used to help a person adapt to a situation, behaviour or person that they cannot expect to change. They cannot change the problem so they have to change their view of it to a positive one. A father who found his daughter headstrong, was able to reframe when a therapist explained how much of an advantage that could be in her future career.

You can also use this kind of reframing to help you tolerate your own faults

Always Bothering

Raise your Game, be Tougher on Yourself

Remember you are usually (eventually) punished in a small or large way for any sloppiness, not emptying/refilling your sports bag as soon as you get back from the gym. Not dealing with your paperwork immediately, not filing it correctly. Not putting a tool back in its exact spot, not having spare printer and computer media, not double checking your travel bookings it goes on.

Remember how much time you waste looking for that mislaid tool, document, how much it might cost you if you miss your flight, being lazy means you end up having to do more!

The trick is to be tougher on yourself to be kinder to yourself in the longterm.

Personal Brainstorming for Successful Ideas

Make use of spare and dead time e.g. waiting at the dentists to brainstorm get out a pencil and piece of paper and just start writing lists of things to do, ways of improving your efficiency, people you need to contact.

Initially you may find this frustrating but persist and once the ideas start flowing you will find yourself scribbling furiously. This works!

The Now Habit

Do Not Ignore Mental Reminders

When your memory reminds you to need to phone someone, put a document in your briefcase for tomorrow, don't just think "I must do that later" because unfortunately your subconscious tends to think it's done its job and may not bother to remind you a second time! I always imagine that if you don't act immediately that your subconscious sulks and thinks well I did warn him but he didn't seem to think it important. This virtually obliges us to deal with things immediately and then, if it is not convenient/possible to complete the task there and then you must all the same take an action, eg diary it, create a post-it note etc.

Planning your Day, Week, Year and Life

Do you have a life plan?

If you want to make your dreams come true you need to have timetables and become goal-driven.

Do you plan your day, do you write it down
Do you plan your week?
Do you plan your year?

It doesn't take long to do these plans but most people don't get round to it, it is a classic "Important but not Urgent" type of task that continually gets put on the back burner!
Loading

Decision Making

The worst decision of all is to make "No Decision" when one is urgently required. So whenever you are required to make a difficult decision weigh up all the evidence as best you can and then choose what seems the best option. There is no point in worrying if you have chosen the right decision that is part of normal risk taking.

Frittering Time Away

Frittering Time is Worse than Procrastination

The successful make use of every little bit of their time, they get down to doing serious work quicker. If a 15 minute gap in their schedule appeared due to a cancellation they would automatically slot in another task, or take a power nap or a real break. What they wouldn't do is fritter away the time with aimless browsing, reading emails. Become aware of how much time you are frittering, have a list of 5 minute tasks ready that you can focus on before the temptation to fritter overcomes you!

Progress may be Imperceptible for a Long Time

For a long time progress in a new venture may appear imperceptible, in fact right until just before it takes off it is easy to despair. This is very common occurrence, unfortunately many give up just before this happens.

Who are You?

What are your Skills and Experience?

Everyone is a unique cocktail of life and work experience, knowledge and skills. Most people also have limiting self-beliefs or conflicting ambitions. The trick is to discover what combination of doubts and skills are holding you back, to discover what are the missing ingredients of your success. Sportsmen have become successful after many years of mediocrity by making one change to their game. Businessmen by changing one product or one aspect of their marketing. Of course it requires massive amounts of self-belief in the preceding years, but that's why all the Self-Improvement books keep on and on about the power of positive thinking!

"The greatest conflicts are not between two people, but between one person and himself." Garth Brooks

Leverage is the Key to Success

Many who could have been/should have been successful simply exhausted themselves trying to do everything themselves. Rather we should EXHAUST ourselves trying to think of EASIER,QUICKER,MORE EFFICIENT ways to get things DONE. There is no longer any virtue in just being a work donkey we should rather think like Tom Sawyer who gets people to pay him for painting Tom's own fence!!

Assertion or Negotiation Technique "The Broken Record"

This is the important ability to keep rephrasing your request until you have countered every objection and get agreement from the other party. This is very difficult for passive people, overly logical people and those brought up to be polite. Before going for a pay rise interview make a list of likely objections then jot down a longer list of reasons why you deserve a pay rise.

The trick is to keep coming back to the same point without appearing to be rude or boorish just persistent. Surprisingly people will respect you for this.

Keep practicing the Broken Record technique.

Breaking a Bad Habit

Is it even possible to break a bad habit?

I've been working on eliminating a bad habit I've had since I remember. I've been using the success techniques I've learned or developed to do this. I've has some success, but notice it comes back when ever I'm stressed. Getting rid of ingrained habits is tough.

I'm using two techniques:-

1) Giving getting rod of my bad habit top-priority!

2) Not punishing myself if I yield to my bad habit, but not rewarding myself either; that means as soon as I realize that I've slipped back into my old ways I STOP.

I know this is going to take time, but the satisfaction I'll have when I finally beat it will be immense.

I've started a lens dedicated to "Curing Bad Habits" see the link below

The Five Minutes More Trick

The Five Minutes More Rule

When you are about to abandon a task because you've had enough or feel you aren't getting any where or are just bored then try applying the "5 minute Rule". Say to yourself I will stick at it for just 5 minutes more and then I can give up or take a break.

At the worst you get 5 minutes work done and at the best you will have found a second wind, got focused and become productive.

Remember the other 5 minute rule that we often want to give up a task after 5 minutes, 5 minutes into writing an essay or starting a run that's the danger time before we've warmed to the task before we see any progress, you can use the five-minute rule to help you through this discouraging phase.

We all have things we are want to get done, but can’t do them today. Big goals such as moving to another country (one of mine) or even smaller ones such as that huge pile of laundry that has been building for weeks turn into unimaginable mountain of tasks.
We always have reasons (aka excuses) why we can’t get them done. We’re too busy, we don’t have enough money, or we can’t take time off work. I could go on and on, but I’ll spare you, as I’m sure you can guess where this is going.

Very interesting approach to success tips! One of your featured books is a favorite of mine 'the power of focus' by Canfield. Focus likely my biggest roadblock, that was very helpful. I linked here from a lens by Tipi, in fact I think I just left a message on another lens of yours and called you Tipi (oops) :-) obviously still thought I was on one of hers. Learning SEO and see a few of her suggestions in action here, link to e-mail list being one and also that 'root' trick in title. Would love to grab your 101 success tips but at moment am drowning in an avalanche of e-mail and my system is not working right. Anyway, cheers to your success and best 2 U on squidoo from carolan in Saint Lou. :-)

"Easier said then done" is a well-known phrase. Just be sure you are not one of those people who says more than they do. Many career and business failures result from "When all is said and done, more will have been said than done."

Some of our bad habits are so ingrained that it takes a long time to break them, it's not easy.
  • SoothingMist Jul 26, 2011 @ 2:57 pm | delete
Be encouraged. Once you have made a clear decision to improve your career, you will find the strength to do so.

Not a tip, but a realization that my days on this planet are finite. That's when I decided to focus on being happy and let the chips fall where they may.
  • SoothingMist Jul 9, 2011 @ 9:58 am | delete
Our days are finite, true. One must trust God and not expect to control everything, true. But, He put us here for a reason. We all have our calling and need to make clear efforts to understand and fulfill that calling.

This thought-provoking lens can be summed up by one of my favourite quotes: "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" (Mary Oliver) I'm happy to say that I'm living my dream life... even if I've learned that even your dream life needs you to constantly improve yourself.

You can achieve considerable success in your career. It is possible to overcome what most people call discrimination, accidents of birth, and late blooming as you continue down the path you prefer. But, you will find that it is not something to be done casually. There are no get-rich-quick schemes, no 90-day wonders, and no labor-free approaches to a successful career. If you want success, you have to reach for it. That reaching takes time and effort: a continuous cycle of studying, learning, working, and producing. In this personal enterprise, you will find great joy and solid employment opportunities. The CareerMentor website offers insights from a 35-year industrial career. You are welcome to make use of its free content (http://informationanthology.net/CareerMentor).

My turnaround moment was when I finally realized "I am responsible" (my future is all in my hands, not in anyone's hands) in college.

I really turned my life the day after I finally find the answer to those questions.

    What I want?
    Why I want it?

Everything started to change and I did not ask myself how to get it. Magically, I started to change possibilities into opportunities.

If you really find out what you desire in life all the boundaries can fade away.

Interesting lens. I tend to progress, slide back, progress. Sometimes progress is obvious, sometimes you have to kinda squint to see it. Workin' on it!

That's to be expected the "slide backs" and you'll get more of them as you move further out of your comfort zone!
