Nice lens! I like history and New York City has a long and colorful one. I saw the movie Gangs Of New York and then later saw a documentary based on it to tell the real story. The movie was fairly faithful. It seems than New York, during its Gang period, was more dangerous than the Wild West period that people think was so dangerous. i also mention one area that I find interesting and that is Hell's Kitchen, later called Five Points and still later Tribeca, a real estate term for the triangle below Canal Street. Nicely done. Thanks for the lens.

Great photos, amazing to see how much the city has really developed since that time. I'm a big fan of Chinatown and the rest of Lower Manhattan. It's been my mission each time I visit to find all the historic places such as where Teddy Roosevelt lived and see the landmarks before they deteriorate completely.

This is an excellent lens. I have always wanted to know how New York City started and when it was established.
  • N376 Sep 11, 2008 @ 4:25 pm | delete
Domvalentine, remind me never have you over to my house and show you photo albums of my family or places I've been. You might not be able to contain your boredom.

And try clicking on the images, they'll be bigger (though I have the feeling no less boring) and beneath each image in the middle is a description of where the shot was taken.

And significance is in the eye of the beholder.
  • Sep 11, 2008 @ 3:38 pm | delete
I feel pretty low for doing this but... I can't see why this particular lens gets to be LoTD to be honest.
    For me, the downsides were:
1)An endless column of black and white photos with no clue as to what they showed or signified.
2)Not a great deal on the actual past 100 years of history.

OK so it celebrates an excellent city on an anniversary of an appalling day in history but it didn't give ME much in the way of info.

    Sorry..bit of a thumbs-down from me
  • Sep 11, 2008 @ 3:33 pm | delete

Well done! As a historian, I spent many hours pouring over books and information about New York's Jewish and Italian immigrants. Did you know that the first Jewish settlers established private worship in New Amsterdam as early as 1682, and public worship was proscribed a decade later? The Jewish settlers rented a location on Beaver Street which is noted on a map dated as far back as 1695. Five years later the synagogue was housed in John Harpendinck's home, on Mill Street. By 1728, Jewish community purchased a plot adjacent to the Harpendinck house and built America's first synagogue.

Great lens. Makes me even more want to visit New York.

I'd like to challenge you on the statement about New York (or London) being the first city in the world. There are cities that have been around much longer, like Istanbul (not Constantinople...), Jerusalem, Rome, Shanghai, etc.

    Still, a very impressive city.

I love New York. Great vintage New York turn of the century photographs. There's no place like New York in the world to visit. My favorite borough in New York to live is Brooklyn.

This lens is terrific. I love looking at old pictures and being from NY makes this twice as interesting. (Thank you for the feature. I'm reciprocating on Long Island, A Tribute.)

I'm lucky enough to be able to go to New York City relatively easily - and it is everything you think it will be. You have some great photos here - very cool to see. Good luck with the trip!

The HQ office for Squidoo is situated in New York. I'd like to go there one day. Whether it's Seth Godin buying me a ticket (because HE wants to meet ME) or paying my own way from Adsense and Amazon revenue, either way, Squidoo will be financing my trip!
