Halloween Is On Its Way...

tweet

Halloween is a time for little ghouls and creepy-crawlies to make their entrance into the night, in search of yummy treats and tricks. We all love a good scare and in our Western society, Halloween embodies all that is scary.

This unit study has been designed to teach children (and adults) everything Halloween related. How long has halloween been celebrated the way we know it? What are it's origins? Need great craft and costume ideas? Read on!

Advice to parents: please read and check out information ahead of time to ensure it is suitable for your child's age. .These unit studies are meant for children of all ages, which means you need to decide which information to use, and which to leave out.

The Origins of Halloween

With it's beginnings in Ancient Ireland, Halloween (or Samhain as it was then-called) has been around since before the time of Jesus. There are several accepted stories regarding it's beginning, but the exact true variation has now been lost to history.

Here is some information about it's origins, but the closest we will perhaps ever get to the truth is fair speculation.

Halloween Facts

  • Halloween is one of the oldest celebrations in the world-pre-dating Christ.
  • Halloween in Welsh is 'Nos Calan Gaeaf.'
  • Halloween is correctly spelled 'Hallowe'en.'
  • When Christianity came to England and the rest of Europe, November 1 became All Saints Day--a day dedicated to all those saints who didn't have a special day of their own. They performed a mass called 'All Hallow Mass' and the night before became known as 'All Hallows E'en,' and eventually Hallowe'en and Halloween.
  • When the Romans conquered England, they merged Samhain with their own festivals, a harvest festival called Poloma, and a celebration for the dead called Feralia.
  • In Mexico, they celebrate El Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) starting the evening of October 31.
  • Black cats were originally believed to protect witches' powers from negative forces.
  • The very first jack-o-lanterns were made out of hollowed-out turnips.
  • Ringing bells scare evil spirits away.
  • If you see a spider on this night, it could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you.
  • Growing big pumpkins is a big-time and serious hobby. Top prize money for the biggest giant pumpkin is as much as $25,000 dollars at fall festivals. The current world record for giant pumpkins is 1446 pounds (that's a lot of pumpkin pies!).
  • With an estimated $1.93 billion in candy sales, Halloween is the sweetest holiday of the year (beating out Easter, Valentine's Day, and Christmas). In fact, one quarter of all the candy sold each year is purchased between September 15 and November 10. Now that's one of the sweetest Halloween facts around!

Jack-O-Lanterns

History of the Jack-O-Lantern:

In Ireland, where Halloween began, the first jack-o'-lanterns weren't made of pumpkins. They were made out of rutabagas, potatoes, turnips, or even beets! There is an old Irish legend about a man named Stingy Jack who was too mean to get into heaven and had played too many tricks on the devil to go to hell. When he died, he had to walk the earth, carrying a lantern made out of a turnip with a burning coal inside. Stingy Jack became known as "Jack of the Lantern," or "Jack-o'-Lantern."

From this legend came the Irish tradition of placing jack-o'-lanterns made of turnips and other vegetables in windows or by doors on Halloween. The jack-o'-lanterns are meant to scare away Stingy Jack and all the other spirits that are said to walk the earth on that night. It wasn't until the tradition was brought to the United States by immigrants that pumpkins were used for jack-o'-lanterns.
