Find Hot Niches with Keyword Research

Keyword Research is the secret to making Money Online. Don't try to make money on the Internet unless you thoroughly understand Keyword Research it is the Due Diligence of the Internet it helps you find profitable niches and more importantly prevents you launching websites which have no hope of making decent money.

Many people have a late-night hunch which seems a brilliant idea and rush ahead and create a website when even a few minutes keyword research would have revealed that hardly anyone is searching for that product and that no amount of SEO or marketing could make it profitable.

Keyword Research seeks to discover the following :-

  • Are there enough people searching for your niche?
  • Are there few existing websites in this niche?
  • Can you do better than these sites?
  • Do you therefore have chance of getting onto page one of Google?
  • What share of this traffic do you need to be profitable?

How to Recognize Keyword Research Success

Keyword Research Golden NuggetDoing Keyword Research you find a niche or micro-niche for keywords which have buyers intent which has lots of searches and surprisingly few websites catering for them, what's more when you visit the sites that are at the top of the Google you find they are poorly optimized and you feel you easily do better.

This is your goal in Keyword Research there may still be other problems but you can now proceed to the next stage of planning for your project

101 Keyword Research Tips List

Keyword Research is about discovering what keywords people enter into the Search Engines when they are knowingly or unknowingly looking for your product. It is also the art of deciding whether enough people doing this to make it worth your while and whether or not your site has chance of getting a share of this traffic ie there aren't too many websites already well established in this niche.

So you can see that there a lot of factors to be considered.

(I guess I'm not close to 101 tips yet!)
  • 1Allintitle Google Search
Enter "allintitle: Dog Brushes" into Google to find how many websites have Dig Brushes in their title. You don't want this to be a big number for example under a hundred. This means you have a good chance if you optimize your site for these keywords to get on the first page of Google.
allintitle must be in all lowercase.
  • 2Search for your Keywords in Google
Yes a normal search how many many are searching for your keywords with and without quotes e.g. "best dog brushes". See what sort of competition there is. If there is hardly any that's not good, more than 30,000 competing websites is usually too many.
  • 3Keywords with Buying Intent
Ideally you want to score high for Keywords with commercial intent. So someone entering "Royal Wedding" into Google usually just just wants information. However someone entering "Copy of Wedding Dress" may be a future bride actually looking to buy a dress! Which traffic do you want?
  • 4Why people always say "First Page of Google"
It's because really 99% of all traffic is generated from the the first page. Don't be too depressed there are lots of first pages.
  • 5Find the Number of Daily Searches for your Keywords Phrase.
Use https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal . There should be at least 200 searches a day to make it worth while and less that 30,000 competing sites or 100 sites using the allintitle search
  • 6AllinURL Google Search
allinurl: keyword research only finds websites with keyword and research in the URL . (I found allinurl had to be in lowercase)
  • 7Become an Expert in how people search
Not an expert in search yourself but an expert in how the public search.
  • 8Google Search allinanchor:"keyword1 keyword2"
This reveals all the sites where your keywords appear in the hyperlink anchor text.
  • 9Due Diligence
This is the process of thoroughly evaluating any business opportunity.
  • 10The Biggest Mistake
The biggest mistake is to make assumptions about what people are looking for on the net, you must not guess you must research
  • 11 Synonyms
Starting with your initial "seed" keywords create a list of synonyms. Why? because you are hoping to come across your nugget keywords, something often searched for but not catered for by many websites.
  • 12Technical/Professional/Layman/Public Keywords
A Doctor or Scientist might describe something by its technical or Latin name, the public might know it by its popular name, others by its slang name. You need to research all variants.
  • 13Spelling Errors
Exploiting spelling errors is rather a grey area but you should research them and add them to your list if they get any traffic
  • 14Global Monthly Search Volume (GMSV)
This is they Search Figure you need to record for comparisons
  • 15Spreadsheet
Use a spreadsheet to keep a tally of your keywords, search count, competition etc
  • 16Buy your Domain/URL LAST after your research
Your domain name will be a critical part of your SEO . It is to easy to get a false feeling that you are being proactive by rushing the purchase of this. Wait until you have completed your research campaign before deciding on this. (Try typing in a few keywords into Google and see how often a domain with nearly exactly those keywords will appear at the top of the listings.
  • 17Being a little bit different
You research keywords to find what people are looking for and then try and find if there is an under-exploited variant of these keywords which gets traffic but does not have many optimized websites catering for them.
  • 18Buying Intent Modifiers
People searching use these frequently :- largest, cheapest, best, low cost, budget, coupon, quickest, market leader.
Add these to your Keyword Phrase and check the results.
  • 19Seed Keywords
These are the keywords you first thought of. They should be your intuitive guesses.
  • 20Look at your Web Statistics
It's always easier to build on existing traffic but you must know where your traffic is coming from and what keywords were used. You can get this information from your web-server statistics and by using Google Analytics.
  • 21More Keyword Modifiers
    Top-ten widgets
  • 22Modifiers: Review
Review Panasonic P1254 Flat-Screen. or User Review or Faults with ..
  • 23Alternative Product Modifiers

  • 24Geographic, Regional Modifiers
These are becoming increasingly popular as more and more local services are source online e.g. plumbers, electricians, hairdressers. Could be a zip or postcode, could be a region or town name. Plumber, Oxford or swimming pool repairs, Dallas.

Why you NEED to Learn Keyword Research?

Keyword Research stops you creating Internet Projects which are the equivalent of opening an Umbrella Store in Death Valley or an Ice Making Factory in Alaska.

Those examples sound dumb but countless web projects are begun on a similar impractical basis. If you want to buy a store you emply accountants to check their books to make sure there sales figures are correct, you then buy an iPod and sandwiches and park near the store a week and click count passer-bys and people actually entering your future store. Then you drive round to see how many competing stores there are, then you go to the planning authorities to check if they are planning to build a mall, redevelop the area etc etc. You can see how much research you need to do for a real store so why not do as much for your web store.

Luckily it's easier on the web as so many tools are available, but you have to know how to use them and you have to take the trouble to use them and not rush headlong into another hopeless project!
