Seven Places to See in Canada Before You Die

Ranked #9 in Travel & Places, #244 overall

Our Home and Native Land

Our family never did any traveling when I was growing up so it has always been one of my dreams. I think I am a natural explorer even though I never really venture far from home.

Money can be a big hindrance to traveling but my husband and I bit the bullet twice over the past four years and decided if we were ever going to do it it was best to do it now.

We divided our trip into two adventures. The first. Driving from Eastern Ontario to Nova Scotia stopping in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island along the way. The second, RVing with the in-laws to British Columbia. We saw a lot of places but not nearly enough to say we have seen it all. Canada is so big! And there is still so much to see.

The more suggestions the better...

What follows are my suggestions for places to see in Canada before you die based on these two trips. But make sure you let me know so I can visit.

Niagara Falls

A busy but exhilarating experience...

Niagara Falls is a border town which falls on the Canadian side in Ontario and on the U.S. side in New York. There are two sets of falls. The larger of the two falls is on the Canadian side and are called the Horseshoe Falls because of its curved resemblance to a horse shoe.

Must see attractions at Niagara include:

* Maid of the Mist
* Great Gorge Adventure
* Niagara Spanish Aero Car
* Niagara Parks Greenhouse / Botanical Garden
* Journey Behind the Falls
* Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory

Of course it is always nice to see things first hand but it is not always realistic. Here are a few options from Amazon to give you some mist in your face.

Sleeping Giant Provincial Park

Nanabijou

The Sleeping Giant or Sibley as she is known to long-term residents is a peninsula that hugs the shores of Thunder Bay, Ontario protecting it from Lake Superior. The rock formations on the peninsula resemble a reclining figure with arms folded across its chest. Of course there are many legends surrounding the figure but the most common is from an ancient Ojibway narrative about Nanna Bijou, the Spirit of the Deep Sea Water, who was turned to stone when one of his people was tricked into sharing the whereabouts of the tribe's silver mine.

As part of a provincial park its protected boreal forests and man-made trails provides a home for an array of wildlife from deer, moose and fox to shore and water birds like the heron and loon.

Hopewell Rocks

During low tide visitors to the Hopewell Rocks, in Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick can walk out onto the Bay of Fundy floor to journey around these amazing natural formations.

This can be an all day adventure if you arrive early... because it is so busy I highly recommend the earlier the better during the summer tourist season.

Must see attractions when visiting the Hopewell Rocks:

* Fundy National Park
* Fundy Trail
* Cape Enrage

Jasper National Park

Every day is breathtaking...

If you long to be surrounded by mountain peaks and exceptional wildlife then you must take the time to go camping in Jasper's National Park, "Canada's largest rocky mountain park". Wake to caribou grazing outside your tent or go and hike a glacier or gaze into turquoise lakes.

Must see attractions at Jasper National Park include:

* Jasper National Park
* Columbia Icefield / Athabasca Glacier
* Lake Louise

The Badlands

Not so bad...

The amazing land formations that exist in the badlands of Alberta, especially in the Drumheller area are definitely a must see. As are the Hoo Doos and the dinosaur museum. Our time here was so short because we didn't know better. I would definitely like to spend more time exploring here.

Must see attractions in the Badlands include:

* The Royal Tyrrell Museum
* The Hoo Doos
* DrumHeller

The Cabot Trail

The circle is complete...

Located in the province of Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island, this is one of my favorite places to see in Canada. Water meets land everywhere you look and the land is so incredibly lush.

    Great lens. I am going to the Cabot Trail and Charlottetown this Friday. Your pictures of Cape Breton is getting me excited about my trip. My favorite two places in Canada are Victoria, BC and Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland.

    Watching the tides rise and fall in the Bay of Fundy has to be one of my favourite. I believe it was recently rated as one of the wonders of the world.

    Stayed in Toronto a few times visiting friends, so visited Niagara Falls, but favourite place would have to be the Rockies in winter. Incredibly cold, but fantastic scenery, especially around Lake Louise. Who could forget lazing in the hot springs at Banff two days before Christmas while the snow falls.

    Sometimes I forget how vast the landscape of Canada really is, thank you for rejoicing it in me! I'd love to travel and see the six I haven't (I've seen the falls)

    Thanks for the lens, I lived in Canada for a couple of years, I can say Mont Tremblant in Quebec and Grouse Mountain in Vancouver are both places to visit without a doubt.
  • justin42 Apr 30, 2012 @ 11:11 pm | delete
    Thanks for the great lens about my home and native land. As it turns out, I have seen most of those places.

    There are so many natural wonders in this wonderful country that I am impressed that you could narrow your list down to only 10.

    Great Lens!!! I have only been to Toronto but I am interested in exploring the rest of such a diverse country.

    I've never been to Canada. It still my dreamed vacation.
  • jsr54 Apr 16, 2012 @ 9:30 pm | delete
    Vancouver is an amazing city with such diversity of people and things to do. It's shiny "blue" buildings give the city a distinct character. I may not ever make it to Canada again, but I'm glad Vancouver was how I experienced Canada.

    I'm in the US and have only done a little bit of traveling into Canada. I have friends in Espanola, and have been to Manitoulin Island and other areas nearby. The scenery you show in these pictures is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

    I once flew into Manitoulin in the winter, talk about a snowy nightmare. LOL
