10 great movies

The 10 movies I like

I guess we all have 10 (or more) movies we tend to watch more than once. Here are the 10 movies I like, and I think you should watch as well. These ten are probably not featured on most all-time greatest lists, but I like them, and hope you will give them a chance, too.

My 10 movies are not in any particular order, just how I came to think of them.

The movies range from animated cartoon types through old-school self-righteous truck drivers, pop-musicals and sci-fi/fantasy and steam punk.

I am certain you may discover or re-discover movies you like, and maybe even miss in your own movie collection.

Wild Wild West

- steam punk made popular

Will Smith is really one of my favourite actors.

Steam Punk is a film genre, that we rarely see, the movies feature steam powered machines far beyond (but including) steam locomotives.

This is action, romance, weird stuff, more action, western scenery and quite an amount of humorous situations, and absurdity.

What I really enjoy is the locations, and the the extensive humour and action. Will Smith and Kevin Kline are brilliant actors, so is Selma Hayek, and she is of course a darling, as ever.

The Meaning of Life

Monty Python hides no secrets

The british comedy group known as Monty Python, starring John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Graham Chapman and Terry Gilliam made several sketch shows for BBC.

Tis is one of their full length movies, which essentially is just a mix of sketches all about life, and the meaning of it, if any.

I have always loved Monty Python and the british approach at crazy humour. Monty Python is brilliant at replaying life, like we never knew it.

Man on the Moon

- biography on the unknown comedian

Andy Kaufman may have been one the funniest non-comedians ever. He was probably best know for playing the immigrant mechanic in the sit-com Taxi.

This movie describes his life - and sad death. This is the type of movie best viewed, when you feel a bit down. Andy's life was in a sense more miserable than many others.

Jim Carrey plays Andy Kaufman with great respect and skill.

Andy Kaufman is presented as a serious actor, and although the movie is quite sad it is at times both puzzling and hilariously funny. In this movie the key character dies, now you are warned.

Shrek

you just gotta love that troll, and hate that donkey

Shrek, the big green troll or ogre who just wants to live peaceful and quit in his swamp, gets stuck with an ever-blabbering donkey, a beautiful, enchanted princess and a dragon in love.

This animated movie features politically in-correct humor (plenty of it), twisted fairy tales and more.

My personal favourite is Donkey, skilfully voiced by Eddie Murphy. The animation, politicial incorrectness and humour makes this one of the animated movie, I can watch over and over again.

Back to the Future I, II and III

Michael J. Fox is a star

All three movies are tangled together in a web of time-travel paradoxes. How do you make your mother fall in love with your father, when she is more in love with you, her son? You get the idea!

Of the three parts, the second part is probably the most "far out". Whereas part 3 in my opnioin is the funniest of them.

My biggest thrill is definately the concept of time travel and the time paradox of meeting you own self in previous times. Michael J. Fox is a brilliant post-teen actor.

I, Robot

Isaac Asimov's classic robot tales

Will Smith again, (yeah I know, he is just great).

Isaac Asimov wrote novels and essays on robot science, long before someone invented the robot lawn mower. He formulated three basic robot rules, and his stories revolved around these rules, hence exploring their consequences. I can recommend reading most of Asimov's robot stories.

I, Robot is the movie version of one of his novels. And, not the worst adaption imagenable.

Here are the Three Laws of Robotics, as formulated by Asimov:
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Mad Max

post-apocaclyptic action

Mel Gibson is very young in this movie. The scene is Earth after the last big war. Fuel is scarce, different gangs is roaming around in deserted wastelands.

There are two more movies in the Mad Max saga.

Post-apocaclyptic scenery always fascinates me. One man for himself, survival of the strongest. Mel Gibson is a good actor, and it is fun to watch him that young.

Convoy

Cowboys on diesel

Self-righteous police, and truck drivers aching for home and freedom.

Of course we all need to drive safely and carefully, but there is some intriguing mystique with these trucks driving in their convoy through the country.

10-4 good buddy!

All these big trucks, endless roads and fun dialogues makes this a movie, I just have to view again, and again.

Grease

Teenage problems with added music

Rydell High. Greased hair. Lovely cars. And young love.

The music is fantastic, full of life. Disco lives on. And several scenes are hilariously funny.

Oh - don't waste any money on the sequel: Grease 2 is really(!) bad, and no match at all.

Wall Street

Sheen, Sheen and Douglas

In the world of high finance Greed is Good. Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) is a real "bitch" and trust me, you will never feel sorry for him. But, anyway this movie does show some of the guts needed to be a success in the cold world of corporate mergers and acquisitions.

Martin and Charlie Sheen are father and son in this movie (as in real life). Martin works in the factory Charlie is involved in selling (and destroying). A little family thingy, coming up :-)
