1940: German begins invasion of the Low Countries. using a new military doctrine called 'blitzkrieg'.
1941: Rudolf Hess, Adolf Hitler's deputy, arrested when he parachuted into Scotland on a mission he claims, to seal a peace between the Third Reich and Britain.
1954: Bill Haley & His Comets release "Rock Around the Clock", the first rock and roll record to reach number one on the Billboard charts.
1960: The nuclear submarine USS Triton completes the first underwater circumnavigation of the earth.

1969: In Vietnam the Battle of Dong Ap Bia begins with an assault on Hamburger Hill.
1978: Britain's Princess Margaret(younger sister to the Queen) and the Earl of Snowdon announced they were divorcing after 18 years of marriage.
1994: Former political prisoner Nelson Mandela is sworn in as the first black president of South Africa.
2002: FBI agent, Robert Hanssen was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole for selling U.S. secrets to Russia for $1.4 million in cash and diamonds.
2005: A hand grenade which is thrown by Vladimir Arutinian lands 20 metres from U.S. President George W. Bush while he is giving a speech to a crowd in Tbilisi, Georgia, but it fails to detonate.

Born on this day
John Wilkes Booth 1838 Confederate sympathizer and well known stage actor who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre, in Washington on April 14, 1865.
Fred Astaire 1899: American dancer and actor whose film career consisted of 31 musical films, 10 of whick he co-starred with Ginger Rogers, The American Film Institute named him the fifth Greatest Male Star of All Time.
Fats Domino (Antoine Dominique Domino)1928 R&B and rock and roll pianist and singer and songwriter. His biggest hit. "Blueberry Hill" sold more than 5 million copies worldwide in 1956-57.
Sid Vicious (John Simon Ritchie) 1957 bassist of the British punk rock group the Sex Pistols. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, 27 years after he died of a heroin overdose.
