In Christian traditions, the 12 Days of Christmas start on Christmas Day and end on January 5, also known as Twelfth Night. Epiphany, the Christian church's celebration of the Three Wise Men's visit and presentation of gifts to baby Jesus, follows on January 6.

The first known printed version of the 12 Days of Christmas song appeared in an English children's book in 1780. It is believed that the song originated as a memory game played at Twelfth Night celebrations.

Today, the 12 days of Christmas aren't celebrated as widely as they once were, but some people carry on some of the traditions such as lighting a candle each of the 12 nights, exchanging gifts and continuing the Christmas celebration through Epiphany, and burning a yule log each night. The tradition of taking down Christmas decorations by the Twelfth Night (January 5th) to avoid bad luck still endures today.
