What does a 12 year old Middle School Boy Like

What do you do or buy for a 12 year old boy
What's it like to be a 12 year old these days? I asked my Grandson, and like most Middle School boys, he wasn't in the mood for entertaining Grandma's questions, but he did spend a little time answering some of them.
As a Grandparent I want to know what interests a boy of 12 in Middle School. I know Middle School is tough on kids as they have so many changes to go through. They aren't little anymore (at least in their own minds) and yet they're not grown either. Puberty is starting, and hormones will be flying. Being 12 is still a good year for those Granma hugs, and fun playing games together. But when it comes time to buy gifts I want to know what a 12 year old boy likes, so I asked him.

Working with Middle School Boys here's what I learned
I worked with kids for over 25 years as a Counselor, mostly with young boys aged 10-14. I really like 10 year old's, and can't wait till 13 year old's grow into themselves usually around 15 1/2. Many people asked me why I preferred working with boys rather than girls, and it was pretty simple. You could put 3 boys in the same room and they got along, or at the very least they learned how to settle their differences.
Girls on the other hand were much harder. You put 3 girls in a room and you never knew which two were best friends at any given moment, excluding the third one. Yes, I prefer working with boys. Entertain them, show respect for them, and help guide them through the turbulent, awkward stages of adolescence.
Young boys want to be accepted, and we can help them only to a certain degree. Give them the tools to learn personal responsibility, don't give them false ego messages, and give them privacy. Their bodies are changing and many of them are embarrassed and don't know how to broach the subject. With the Internet so popular it's easy to find information, but just as easy to find misinformation. Parents, Grandparents, and Caretakers need to make sure their boys have the information they need to steer their way through this period of puberty successfully.
Unconditional love and separating a behavior from the person when disciplining is very important. We want our boys to grow up with healthy self-esteems, be compassionate, and well educated. Learning the right behaviors and keeping them safe can be a delicate balance. This age group of boys is starting to break away from the family and so it is crucial that you are there for him, but not overbearing.
Peer Acceptance will start dominating his life, and if he is short, overweight, or is different in any way others will tease him. Middle School is rough, and kids can be very mean to each other as they all try to blend in. Don't be surprised that he might pick friends you don't like, or starts actually taking a shower without being told repeatedly. I love the age they find girls, because that's the age they also find the soap on their own.
Enjoy the 10-12 year old's, love the 13 year old's even more, and watch the calendar for when your 14 year old transforms into someone that has their hormones finally in balance :)
What does a 12 year old think
read what a 12 year old middle school boy has to say
The following answers to my questions were written by my 12 year old Grandson.
Q- What's it like to be the only boy in the family.
A- Being the only boy is pretty bad. When the family goes shopping I have to follow the girls to all the girly stores.
Q- What are your favorite toys?
A- My favorite toys are legos and board games
Q- What's it like at Granma's house?
A- At Granma's house we have to do all of Granma's chores, for example yesterday we had to clean the whole front yard! On the bright side, Granma makes good food.
Q- What are your favorite sports?
A- My favorite sport is baseball because in every other sport you get more injured. Baseball is the only sport I play on a team.
Q- What kind of book would you like to have?
A- I want a book on pitching.

Young Boys Love Legos

Board Game for a 12 year old: Scrabble
Perfect for a competitive activity the whole family can enjoy
Srabble is a game that is both educational, and meets the needs of the competitive nature in kids. My grandson loves Scrabble and Chess the best for "Board Games". His sisters also love Scrabble, and it makes a nice family activity, especially for Grandparents that don't tolerate as many of the noisy activities they once did . I know, I have 7 grandkids.
XBox 360
Holiday Value Xbox 360
Wii Games for Boys
3 things 12 year old boys have in common
If I were to name 3 things 12 year old boys have in common it would be:
- Energy, and Love of Jokes and Teasing
- Desire for Social Acceptance by their peers
- The last year they are somewhat of a little boy
Most of them are awkward when it comes to how to behave around girls as this is about the time that they start really seeing girls as more than just a friend or someone to tease. Finding gifts for this age can be challenging if you want more than sports or Video Games. Here are a couple unique gifts for 12 year old boys.

- My 12-yr old loves making stop-motion movies with his Legos. He uses a simple digital camera on a tiny camera stand. He then uses i-movie to play the movie and add sound effects. I know there are other programs that can do the editing if you don't have a Mac. You can find lots of stop motion Lego movies on You Tube as examples. Just an idea!

- My son is 9 years old but is already entering puberty. He is also taller than every kid in his class. That plus the fact that his reading is well above that for other 9 years olds, all make adults think that he is more mature that he really is. My 9 year old son loves video and computer games and is NOT yet into scrabble and chess although he does like monopoly. I also agree with you that boys are far easier to raise than girls.

- Serena, that is hard for your son in many ways. If others are expecting him to be more mature because of size and academic abilities it can have an effect on him. It is amazing how many adullts judge kids by size and abilities. Just enjoying him being 9 now is great...and wait until he's 10, that's a great age for little boys ;)

- My grandson is almost 12 so I really appreciate this great page about 12 year old boys. He has helped me with several of my lenses. Does your grandson know about the Baseball Card Adventure Books? We made a lens about them.

- It certainly does. I'm an auntie and always find it easier to relate to girls (having been one myself and having some common interests) so this makes for a great guide to nephews! :) Like the boys in the video, I remember how at that age there was a love still of the toys back home but pressure to act cool at school. P.S. You made me laugh with the fart gifts!
