127 Hours: A Movie Review

127 Hours Starring James Franco
Director Danny Boyle follows up his Academy Award winning Slumdog Millionaire, with this Oscar nominated film that delves into the enduring human spirit as it battles against nature's elements and the onset of mental and physical weakness.
As someone who usually prefers to watch sci-fi thrillers, for me this movie became a suspense thriller of the highest degree, which I enjoyed immensely. Sometimes, true human ordeals and the ways they are overcome make for the best screen stories, and 127 Hours is no exception.

Danny Boyle invites us to a landscape that has previously paid host to cowboys, Indians and the odd flesh eating family. This time the beauty of the barren Canyonlands National Park in Utah kidnaps James Franco as he seeks adventure away from the crowded noise of city life.
Based on the real life events of Aron Ralston, Boyle breathes life into the desolate surroundings that sees Ralston seemingly trapped in a remote canyon with no means of escape. Similar to the protagonists of those past Western and horror movies, these beautiful stone formations become his kidnapper, holding him at bay for 127 hours.
Boyles direction juxtaposes the serenely quiet National Park with the growing fear and urgency of Ralston. A fall into a crevasse dislodges a boulder that ensnares his forearm and hand. Seemingly calm at the beginning of this ordeal, a realization sets in on Ralston that he is trapped with no means of escape, and without a cell phone, no means of contacting the outside world.
Having seen several trailers for this movie, this scenario drew me in. How was the story of a trapped man, alone in the wilderness, going to sustain the more than ninety minutes of celluloid? Those used to thrillers with non-stop action may be disappointed. This is not one of those films. Some have even called it boring, but they are missing the point. This is a story of human survival and how both Ralston and director Danny Boyle deal with it.
Without giving too much away, James Franco's superb performance of this man's progressive mental weakness, along with a lack of sustenance allows Boyle to fill the void with the introduction of a backdrop of characters. The threads of Ralston's existence are woven together through hallucinatory visions as we meet those who mean most to him.
It is at this point that it appears this will be the last time he will see any of them again. But throughout this ordeal, his will to survive has burned brightly. Desperate times call for desperate measures, but he has only one method of escape. How this is accomplished may have you turning from the screen, but it is a testament to human survival.

James Franco Plays Aron Ralston
Previously seen in such movies as Milk, Pineapple Express and Spider-Man 3, James Franco puts in one of his finest performances as mountain climber, Aron Ralston.Franco uses Ralston's predicament to instill a gamut of emotion in his characterization. He demonstrates his acting chops as Ralston's initial optimism for an escape route soon turns to frustration and anger.
One would not think humour could become a part of this story, but using a camera to record his situation, Franco fills the hours trying to entertain himself. Is this a reaction to the onset of a deteriorating mental condition or a means of survival? Indeed, is it an acceptance of his hopeless plight?
Franco makes this hopelessness believable. He makes you think about what we would do in a similar situation. When all else fails, would we yield to the predicament or make a painful sacrifice?
Deservedly, James Franco was nominated for numerous acting accolades for this role, including an Oscar, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award.

Music From 127 Hours
A R Rahman & Dido
Rahman's music, along with pop standards from Bill Withers and Plastic Bertrand, is central to the atmosphere created for the movie. Utah's expansive orange landscape blends seamlessly with the blue of the sky, with Rahman forming the horizon. His songs weave an intricate fusion between the shades of Ralston's emotional outbursts and discarded submission.
Here he is joined by Dido for the poignantly charged and aptly titled If I Rise.

- I love James Franco, he is a great actor. I haven't seem 127 hours yet, but I will, although my husband who is a rock climber kinda hate people who makes reckless things (such as Aron Ralston did by not telling anyone where he went) and then wonders why they get hurt or worst.

- I have not seen the movie, but I know the story (I think just about everyone does), but I can't imagine it being boring because agony, fear, hopelessness, indecision and resignation alone would be enough to keep a person enthralled. Good lens about a good movie.

- Excellent review. I've been concerned about the claustrophobia of the movie and frankly, that has kept me from seeing it.
