13 Signs You Live In A Haunted House

Ranked #860 in Culture & Society, #21,695 overall

Are You Afraid You Might Be Living In A Haunted House?

Cold spots, strange noises, mysterious lights in the attic. You first reaction is probably to just blame it on the wind when you see a door open all by itself. Nobody wants to admit they might be living in a haunted house. Who really believes in ghosts?!

The people who lived in this house didn't believe in ghosts either. And in the beginning, they blamed the strange things that were happening on the wind and the children and their own bad luck.

But, after a while, it becomes impossible to keep denying what's happening right before your very eyes. Haunted houses are more common than most people think. And if you think you're living in a haunted house, there's a very good possibility you are.

Here are 13 signs you're living in a haunted house.

13 Signs Your House Is Haunted

Cold Spots
Do you notice a significant drop in temperature in a certain spot in your home? Or maybe you've suddenly felt a small puff of cool wind, even though the doors and windows are all closed. Sometimes these cold spots can be barely noticeable and other times you might even be able to see your breath because the surrounding air is so cold. Cold spots are a strong indicator of spiritual activity.

Footsteps
Do you hear ghostly footsteps along the hallway at night? Or maybe you hear them overhead, upstairs in the kids' room. Only the kids are at school. If you've checked for causes and can't find a reasonable explanation, then there's a good possibility your house is haunted. Footsteps are one of the most common occurrences reported by people who live in a haunted house.

Your Pets
Are your pets afraid to enter a certain room or area of the house? Have you seen them suddenly turn and run and cower under the bed? Do they sit and stare at nothing in particular, growl menacingly or become suddenly aggressive, all with no apparent reason? Animals are particularly sensitive to spiritual contact and they often sense ghostly beings before humans do.

Your Guests
When friends or family visit your home do they report feeling uncomfortable or cold? Do they appear fidgety or nervous, unable to relax? Sometimes we become immune to the strange happenings in our homes because we live with it day in and day out. If you notice family and friends acting strangely when they visit, it could be because they sense something in your home.

"Now clear your minds. It knows what scares you. It has from the very beginning. Don't give it any help, it knows too much already. " Tangina in "Poltergeist" 1982

Unusual Odors
Our sense of smell is one of the most important of the five senses and smells or odors are often associated with memories. Common odors - like dirt or spices or perfume-like fragrances - that appear at uncommon times or places can often indicate the presence of spirits who are drawn to your home because of past memories.

Your Children
Children are particularly open to sensing and seeing spirits. They're young and haven't yet been conditioned to believe there' no such thing as ghosts. If your children are telling you your house is haunted it's a good possibility they're right.

Doors
Drafts, wind, uneven foundations - these can all cause doors to open without human intervention. But when all those physical possibilities are exhausted, if you still have doors opening and closing on their own, then you probably have a ghost in your house.

Windows
How many times have you entered a room and found the window open when you know you closed it earlier? If you've tried locking windows so they stay closed or propping them up with something so they stay open, and nothing seems to work, it's probably the work of a ghost.

Strange Noises
It's probably most difficult to determine if those strange noises you hear are coming from a ghost who's haunting your house or if they're just a result of your house settling or the wind or an animal caught in the attic. It's easy to dismiss those bumps in the night. But if you hear the same sound repeatedly, and there's no other explanation, and especially if other strange things are happening in your house, you need to be careful. Your house just might be haunted!

Ghostly Orbs
Are there strange orb of light appearing in photographs that you take inside or around your home? They're most likely just dust on your camera lens or light reflecting off of dust in the air. But those orbs can also indicate the presence of ghosts.

Unexplained Activity
If chairs are moving and dishes are flying through the air and the piano is playing by itself then it's safe to assume you either have a poltergeist or you're living in a haunted house.

EVP
Try setting up a voice activated recorder in a room where you've experienced ghostly activity. If your recorder isn't voice activated, and you have enough courage, stay in the room and ask the ghost if it has anything to say. Chances are you won't hear a response to your questions - until you play back the tape.

Ghostly Apparitions
Assuming no one is playing tricks on you for some reason and your Halloween costumes are all stowed in the attic, if you see a ghostly apparition then your house is haunted. It's easy to convince yourself that it was just your eyes playing tricks on you or you were spooked by your own shadow. But when you look directly at a ghost - and he looks back at YOU - then you are living in a haunted house. What you need to do now is determine if the ghost has good intentions or not and if he intends to let you live there peacefully - or if he's going to make your life miserable.

Congrats on this lens getting a purple star! It was a great read with good tips on how to know if your house may be haunted. I never experienced any of them personally, (Thank God!) The house we live in had some strange people and activities in it before we moved here. We made sure we went through the house, cleansing and blessing each room before we moved in.

Good info and right on target! Of the many things you mentioned, at least 4 were apparent in my own home. The "children" was the kicker for me, since her fear was the final, convincing "feeling" I needed to realize I was right! Glad we moved!

We lived in a house on the farm that I think was haunted. I heard footsteps and had a door slam upstairs when I was home alone, but the most eerie sound I heard was someone practicing on the piano. There was no piano in the house, and the sound was very distant, I heard it only at night--and not every night. The only problem is, although some of the kids heard the footsteps and whispers, I was the only one who ever heard the "not very good music." May have been the precursor to the ringing I hear now.

  • Cre8ability Dec 30, 2011 @ 2:32 am | delete
Very interesting information. I know the dearly departed are sometimes around me - sometimes at night when I'm in bed I feel someone sit on the bed. The first time it happened I was too scared to look. Now I just say "I don't know who you are but I hope you're here for a good reason'. The first time I actually saw someone freaked me out - usually it's a feeling that someone's there. I was home alone and as I walked down the corridor I saw a man walk towards our bedroom. I thought I had left the back door open but when I looked and it was all locked up that was it!! After checking the bedroom and finding no-one I rang my husband and said I was staying at my daughter's house for the night. It hasn't happened again although my grand-daughter who is 10 has her paternal grandmother visit her at night. She sits on her bed and talks to her. My granddaughter described the dress her grandmother wears and when my son-in-law had a psychic reading, the psychic told him this information without him asking. She also described the dress his mother wears when she comes to "visit". He knew then my grand-daughter was telling the truth. Unfortunately, for months, the child woke constantly through the night, having to get up and turn the lights on then go and wake her parents up. Very unsettling for everyone, especially the child.

A great lens. I've never lived in a haunted house, but my spouse has. When she was a kid the rocking chair would rock by itself at night - even if moved to a different spot. Blessed and featured on "Wing-ing it on Squidoo," our tribute page to some of the best lenses we've found since donning our wings.

I used to live in a haunted house in a small town. I got used to the footsteps, the weird noises and shadows in the hall,.... but my family and bf, who visited often, were not impressed. They freaked, and they refused to switch off the lights when they went to bed.

I defended the ghosts, because I did not think that they meant any harm.

Shortly before I moved back to the city, the land lord told me that a Chinese business man used to rent the place, and he was killed inside the house.

I loved your lens! Brought back some spooky memories.
  • lbrummer Oct 12, 2011 @ 1:33 pm | delete
I'm pretty sure that the house we lived in on the farm was haunted. Besides hearing footsteps upstairs and having a door slam upstairs when no one but I was home, I swear I heard piano music playing in the distance. It sounded like someone practicing piano, the music wasn't that good---but the piano was no longer in the house, taken out years before.

Spooky lens. My parents owned a campground in South Dakota. One of the buildings on site used to be a retirement home in the 1900s. Most of us avoided the basement because it had a lot of the items on your list. I tend to be skeptical but the feelings were to hard to ignore.

Fantastic lens - I don't currently live in a haunted house, but back when I lived in New York, I'd get that chilly, skin-prickly feeling in parts of the house all the time.

I actually live in a haunted house - only my Mom and one of my very intelligent dogs recognizes the physical entity of the ghost. I hear him and "feel" his presence though. He fascinates me.

Excellent lens. One creepy thing happened to 2 of us who were working late in an office in Indiana about 5 years ago. We had to go to one end of the building where the lights were off, and it seemed unusually chilly, and we both felt a sense of something down there. If it was just me I would have ignored it, but we both felt something there. Blessed by an angel, I really enjoyed this lens.
  • SheWritesaLot Sep 20, 2011 @ 11:18 pm | delete
Thank you so much poddys! My first angel blessing! I think I would have been more afraid if I'd been alone in that situation. And why didn't you turn on the lights?!
