Born in North Carolina and raised in New York. Married 34 years. I own too many damn cats.
October is coming.
I look forward to Halloween. Each October, I read Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and I watch ghost videos. I save the best for Halloween. I choose one or three from the this list of 13 great Ghost Stories.
13 Great Ghost Movies
* The Innocents (1961) - based on Henry James's Turn of the Screw, but somehow even scarier.
* The Haunting (1963) - based on Shirley Jackson's chilling The Haunting of Hill House. The movie is better than the book. Watch out for the spiral stairs!
* Blithe Spirit (1945) - Wonderful screwball comedy involving dead people and a zany medium. My Dad saw the stage play in London during WW2 when he was stationed in England.
* 13 Ghosts (1960) - I saw this with the special glasses in the old Rockland Theater in my home town of Nyack, NY and it scared the heck out of me.
* Topper (1937) - I actually liked the TV show better. Cary Grant made the better ghost, though.
* The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947) - The most romantic story in the list. You've got to love Gene Tierney.
* Ghost (1990) - Sappy, but I like the crazy guy on the subway.
* The Shining (1980) - Here's Johnny! Way over the top, but still a scary story.
* House on Haunted Hill (1958) - One word: Vincent Price.
* The Canterville Ghost (1944) - has one of my mother's favorite actors, Charles Laughton, having a wonderful time with the part of the ghost.
* Poltergeist (1982) - Perhaps too slick, but a cool ending and the clown under the bed was cool.
* Hold That Ghost (1941) - best Abbot and Costello movie.

What about 1945's "Dead of Night"? That's the classic British film where various people exchange ghost stories at an old country house. Michael Redgrave plays a ventriloquist possessed by his dummy in the finale.
