OK, so this is a little literary license, since I was a child then, too.
Henrietta is just south of Rochester in Upstate New York, which is also not part of NYC. :D.

Henrietta, New York although bordering the city of Rochester, is a suburb surrounded by farm land, and at a guess may actually be more farm or unused land than residential. For example, my home is located in a neighborhood tract, but is within 1/2 mile of farm or uninhabited land on 3 sides.

About the Author
Town historian for over 15 years, Helen Vollmer Elam founded the Henrietta Historical Society and cofounded the Antoinette Brown Blackwell Society (in honor of the nation's first ordained woman minister). For over 20 years, she has served as chair of the Henrietta Historic Site Committee, which has produced 12 preservation districts, and has written a regular column in the Henrietta Post. For Henrietta, she has selected some 200 of the finest images that show the town from the mid-1800s to the early 1940s.

- Funny you mentioned people not familiar with NY State thinking Henrietta (or any part of western NY State) is just a suburb of NYC. I went to college (from Rochester) in Kansas (long story) and people 'out there' (who had never been to the East Coast) asked me such questions as "Do you go into New York City to do your grocery shopping?". Duh -- NYC is 400 miles from Rochester! LOL. Yes, mention New York and everyone assumes it's ALL New York City! Love your western NY stories!
