Shopping for gold jewelry on-line or off requires a certain amount of trust, unless you are an expert in fine jewelry and gemstones yourself. The nature of the trust required boils down to trust in the jewelry store where you buy your jewelry.

All you really need to know is: Can you get your money back if you are not happy.
A big advantage of buying fine jewelry from a local retail store is the ability to inspect the actual piece of jewelry that you are purchasing. When buying jewelry online, you do not see the individual item until after you have paid for it and it is delivered to your door.
The right to complain
Jewelry dealers value their own reputation. Their business success depends upon it, and if they are smart they will go out of their way to make you happy. A happy jewelry customer is more likely to come back and buy more. An unhappy jewelry customer goes away and takes their entire family and circle of friends with them, never to return.
It is important that an on-line jeweler provide an honest public comment section so that unhappy customers can tell the world exactly why they are unhappy, and for others to be warned.
Market price of gold
The market price of gold itself plays a role in determining the retail price of fine jewelry. In March, 2008 the market price of gold spiked to historic levels of about $1000 (US) per ounce. That would have been the wrong time to buy gold, since the price has come down considerably. Today's price of gold in November 2008, about $730 (US) per ounce, is a return to the gold price of a year ago in November, 2007.
The overall trend in gold prices has been upward since the year 2000, when it was trading at a low of $270 (US) per ounce.
