Ways To Declutter Your Home #1-5

Getting You Started!

So you need some ideas, right? Of course you do! Read through the suggestions below. Jot down a few that you think might work for you, and laugh at the ones you think are ridiculously un-helpful. Remember, not all advice or ways to declutter your home works for every person out there! How you declutter your home will be different than how your neighbor may do it!
  1. Pick a room and get everything up off the floor! If you're de-cluttering your bedroom for example, put the clutter that has collected on top of your bed so that you can't get INTO your bed without moving it into a new (and proper) spot!
  2. Go through each room with a box, searching for only the things that go in one area. Example: look for CD or DVD cases, and return them all to their proper storage areas.
  3. Make a particular room worthy of beautiful flowers. Once it's clutter free, reward yourself with something beautiful!
  4. Ask someone to help you go through anything you're not sure if you should throw out. Trying to explain why you really need to keep something can be both enlightening and hilarious!
  5. Do a quick walk-through the whole house with a garage bag in hand and dispose of the trash that has accumulated. Easy enough to do, right?

Declutter Your Walls!

Create a clean-cut, organized look!

One of the often forgotten ways to declutter your home is to consider your decorating! If you have several smaller photo frames hanging spaced out on a larger wall, consider rearranging them in a tight geometric design (a cluster). Rule of thumb? Max 2 inches between photo frames. If you do this, it will calm down the room because you are building a focal point that draws the eye to the one collection, rather than cause the eye to jump around a larger space!
Another simple way to show off your many favourite pictures is to use a multiple-photo frame such as the one below.

There are many types of frame collages/sets such as this one that can give a polished look to your house in a matter of minutes! Your pictures are too precious not to display, so show them off well, and declutter your house at the same time!

Five More Ideas To Get You Going!

  • Look at the space you want to focus on first. Come up with a Rewards / Punishments System for yourself, and then FOLLOW THROUGH with it! (It works for your kids, doesn't it?)
  • Invite your mother-in-law for tea or dinner one week from today!
  • Buy a pantry cupboard and put it in the office! Pantry cupboards work well as extra closets... they are basically bookshelves with doors.
  • Do a quick walk-through the whole house with your laundry basket in hand and toss in all "lost" tea-towels, sweaters, socks, spit blankets, rags, and whatever else you find.
  • Hire a professional organizer to do all the work for you!

Declutter That Pantry!

A "How-To" That REALLY WORKS!

ways to declutter your homeIn your search for ways to declutter your home, perhaps you have made your way into the kitchen area by now. You notice that your pantry cupboard is over-flowing, and your freezer for that matter, is too! Did you notice the other day when you were unpacking your groceries that you once again bought items of which you already had plenty? Does your family half-jokingly say that you have enough diced tomato jars to last you through 2 more years? You need to declutter your pantry!

How to BEST declutter your pantry is a tip I learned from my own mother, a woman who not only had nicely organized cupboards and always the right ingredients for her meals in her house, but a woman who also was able to stretch her food budget very nicely because this tip saved her from impulse buying at the grocery store!

To declutter your pantry, take a good look at the items you have on hand and jot down a basic menu for the next 2 weeks on a calendar. Use the menu plan to slowly but surely go through the build-up of boxes of minute rice, canned beans, spice packages, etc. Then, write your grocery list for the week, incorporating only the items you still need to make those meals. Fight off the impulse buys and the "sales", and stick to your list! If you do succumb to a good deal, USE THE PRODUCT by adding it to your menu for the following week!

If you follow this plan, your pantry will soon be much less cluttered, and you will notice one added benefit... you won't have to struggle with the age-old question of "what should I make for dinner" every night, because you will have all of your ingredients on hand and a plan in place!

  • Sort through your clothes closet and focus on tossing into a garbage bag anything that screams "fad". Yes, it may come back in style someday, but probably that someday is 20 years from now! You may be surprised at how much you throw out, and how much closet space you gain!
  • Label 4 boxes as follows, and fill them with the appropriate clutter: 1) DISCARD 2) DONATE 3) DECIDE LATER 4) DEFINITELY KEEP
  • Realize that "anywhere" is a good place to start. You don't always have to have an action plan for decluttering your house. You may get more done by just jumping in where you are!
  • Advertise publicly the day you plan to hold that talked-about garage sale so there's no backing out! Chances are you'll appreciate the extra funds a lot more than you will the items themselves cluttering up your house!
  • List those already-unwanted items on freecycle.org. If you're uncomfortable with having strangers come to your door, tag the item with the person's name and leave it on the front porch.
